The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has unveiled a model of the next-generation JF-17 PFX (Pakistan Fighter Experimental) aircraft for the first time during the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024 in Karachi.
The event, which concluded on November 22, showcased Pakistan’s growing capabilities in defense production. The JF-17 PFX, developed in collaboration with the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC), is a 4.5-plus generation fighter jet.
Officials described it as an advanced aircraft with longer-range air-to-air missiles (AAMs) than previous JF-17 versions. Pakistan also plans to produce the radar system for the new fighter, with development expected to be completed before the end of the decade.
IDEAS 2024 also marked significant progress in defense exports. Pakistan signed 82 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various nations, securing deals worth $30 billion. These agreements cover a range of defense products, including advanced drones, fighter jets, ships, electronic warfare systems, and radars.
At the closing ceremony, Lt Gen (Retd) Chiragh Haider, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Production, highlighted that total potential export orders have reached $36 billion, combining new and past agreements. While the deals involve extensive testing and modifications, some projects may materialize within a couple of years, bolstering Pakistan’s defense industry and international partnerships.
