China to Give Training to Pakistan Police

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with a high-level Chinese delegation led by Minister of Political and Legal Affairs Chen Mingguo to discuss boosting cooperation in counterterrorism, cross-border collaboration, and combating smuggling and drug trafficking.

The two sides explored the possibility of conducting joint police and paramilitary exercises in either Gilgit-Baltistan or Xinjiang and agreed to train Gilgit-Baltistan police officers at the Xinjiang Police Academy.

Chen Mingguo highlighted Xinjiang’s long history of counterterrorism efforts and suggested that Pakistan could learn from its experience. He also extended an invitation to Interior Minister Naqvi to visit Xinjiang. Both parties agreed on a comprehensive strategy to tackle terrorism.

Naqvi emphasized Pakistan’s 600-kilometer border with Xinjiang and the importance of strengthening ties with the region, especially as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) runs through Xinjiang.

The Chinese delegation included Xinjiang’s Deputy Secretary of the Committee for Parliamentary and Legal Affairs, the Executive Director General of Police, and the Vice President of the Xinjiang Police Academy. From Pakistan, Interior Secretary Khuram Ali Agha, Special Secretary of the Interior Waqas Ali Mahmood, and Additional Secretary of the Interior Nazar Muhammad Buzdar were also in attendance.

In a related event, Chinese Public Security Minister Wang Xiaohong announced that China had trained 2,700 officers last year and plans to train 3,000 more from various countries in the next 12 months. He added that Chinese police consultants would be dispatched to countries in need to help enhance their law enforcement capabilities.

This announcement was made during a security conference in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, which was attended by law enforcement representatives from 122 countries and organizations, including Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Interpol.
