The Sindh government, in collaboration with Pakistan Railways, has announced plans to initiate a new suburban railway service between Rohri and Sukkur.
In a recent meeting between Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Shah and officials from Pakistan Railways, discussions focused on extending suburban railway services not just within Karachi, but all the way to Sukkur. The goal is to create a modern train system modeled after Lahore’s suburban rail network. According to Shah, the new route could benefit millions of daily commuters across Sindh.
The Rohri to Sukkur rail line was declared a priority route, and both sides agreed to push forward with its development. The project will be a joint initiative, with a committee formed to ensure coordination between the Sindh government and Pakistan Railways.
The two parties also agreed on full cooperation regarding the larger ML-1 (Main Line-1) railway project. Discussions included ways to modernize railway stations, improve safety at crossings, and enhance the environment by developing green belts around station areas.
Shah also expressed concern over the stalled Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project. While the Sindh government has completed its assigned tasks, he noted that Pakistan Railways has unexpectedly halted the removal of encroachments, delaying progress.
The Rohri–Sukkur suburban service, once operational, could significantly reduce congestion in Sindh’s cities and mark a shift toward reliable, modern public transport outside major metropolitan centers.
