
The federal government has approved a major upgrade of the Grand Trunk (G.T.) Road (N-5), aiming to convert it into a uniform three-lane carriageway on the pattern of motorways.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has been tasked with initiating work on the plan, which will be executed in two phases. Officials confirmed that the first phase is expected to be completed within the current fiscal year.
The G.T. Road, stretching from Karachi to Torkham, is Pakistan’s longest national highway and a key north-south trade route.
Senior officials from the communications ministry, economic affairs division, and planning department attended the meeting to present recommendations for its restoration and expansion.
The minister stressed the need to upgrade the road district by district to reduce travel issues. He also directed relevant departments to carry out regular inspections and prepare cost-effective proposals.

Abdul Aleem Khan said past financially unviable road projects caused major losses, adding that this project aims to ensure quality infrastructure without burdening the national exchequer. He assured strict monitoring to keep the project on track and transparent.
