China’s Rise and Changing World: Opportunities for Pakistan and the Global South.

China’s 77th anniversary celebrates a remarkable national journey. For Pakistan and the wider Global South, it also presents an opportunity to build a future in which technological progress, responsible diplomacy and mutually beneficial cooperation contribute to peace and shared prosperity.  The 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China provides an opportunity to reflect on one of the most remarkable transformations in modern history. Since October 1, 1949, China has evolved from an economically underdeveloped country into a major global power, with extraordinary achievements in industrialization, infrastructure, science, technology and poverty reduction. Its growing international influence is reshaping economic relationships and diplomatic engagement across the world. For Pakistan, China’s progress carries particular significance. The two countries are not only close neighbours and strategic partners but also longstanding friends whose cooperation has expanded across generations. Their 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026 offers a timely opportunity to strengthen this partnership and translate its potential into tangible benefits for both peoples. From national transformation to technological leadership China’s development demonstrates the importance of long-term planning, consistent policies, investment in human resources and the integration of scientific research with industrial production. Modern transport networks, advanced manufacturing, high-speed rail, digital infrastructure and expanding renewable energy capacity have transformed the country’s economic landscape. China is also strengthening its position in electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, solar energy and advanced batteries. Its newly announced five-year plan for the new-type battery industry, covering 2026–2030, sets ambitious targets for technological innovation and the initial large-scale application of all-solid-state batteries by 2030. Such advances matter far beyond China: they can influence the future of transport, energy storage, industrial competitiveness and the global transition towards cleaner technologies. President Xi Jinping’s National Day message emphasized confidence, determination and continued progress towards Chinese modernization. Having achieved its first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, China is pursuing its longer-term ambition of becoming a modern socialist country. The central challenge now is to sustain innovation, improve people’s well-being and ensure that development remains productive and resilient amid a changing global economy. China’s growing geopolitical influence China’s rise is not confined to economics. Its expanding diplomatic engagement, participation in multilateral institutions and initiatives on development, security and civilizational dialogue have made it an increasingly consequential actor in international affairs. The restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in 2023, following talks hosted and facilitated by China in Beijing, demonstrated the potential of diplomacy to reduce regional tensions. The agreement did not resolve every underlying disagreement, but it created an important opening for dialogue between two influential Middle Eastern countries. China’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiative also reflect its ambition to shape international discussions on development, security, cultural understanding and global institutions. These proposals appeal to many developing countries seeking greater representation in international decision-making and a stronger voice in addressing shared challenges. As geopolitical competition intensifies, China’s constructive contribution will be measured by its ability to encourage dialogue, respect national sovereignty, support development and work with other countries through multilateral institutions. No major power can resolve global challenges alone. Cooperation on climate change, food security, public health, technological governance and conflict prevention remains essential. A stable international environment serves the interests of China, Pakistan and the wider global community. Countries should therefore seek common ground rather than allow strategic competition to undermine opportunities for cooperation. Pakistan–China partnership: Turning friendship into prosperity Pakistan and China established diplomatic relations in 1951. Over 75 years, their relationship has developed into an all-weather strategic cooperative partnership based on mutual trust, respect and support. Cooperation spans diplomacy, defence, infrastructure, education, agriculture, trade, energy and science and technology. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative, has strengthened connectivity and supported investment in Pakistan. The next phase, CPEC 2.0, offers an opportunity to move beyond infrastructure towards industrial cooperation, agricultural modernization, mineral development, information technology and employment generation. Scientific cooperation is opening new frontiers as well. In September 2026, Reuters reported that two Pakistani pilots were training in China for a potential mission aboard the Tiangong space station. The planned collaboration includes scientific experiments relevant to food security and climate change. It illustrates how a strategic partnership can extend into advanced research and create opportunities for Pakistani scientists and universities. Nevertheless, stronger economic outcomes require sustained effort. Pakistan should improve its business environment, develop skilled human resources, expand exports, strengthen research institutions and encourage technology transfer. Chinese investment should help build local industrial capacity, create quality employment and connect Pakistani enterprises with international markets. Agriculture deserves particular attention. Cooperation in modern irrigation, agricultural machinery, food processing, biotechnology and climate-resilient crops could improve productivity and rural livelihoods. Joint research, university exchanges and professional training can further equip young Pakistanis for an increasingly technology-driven economy. A shared future through practical cooperation China’s experience offers lessons, not a model that every country must reproduce. Pakistan must identify the approaches suited to its own institutions, resources and development priorities. The objective should be to learn, adapt and innovate. As China continues its development journey, Pakistan should deepen cooperation in areas where mutual interests are strongest. The success of this partnership will ultimately depend not only on diplomatic declarations or strategic agreements, but also on higher exports, stronger industries, scientific discoveries, better education and improved living standards. China’s 77th anniversary celebrates a remarkable national journey. For Pakistan and the wider Global South, it also presents an opportunity to build a future in which technological progress, responsible diplomacy and mutually beneficial cooperation contribute to peace and shared prosperity.
