President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, will undertake a visit to Turkmenistan to attend the International Forum on “Interrelation of Times and Civilizations – Basis of Peace and Development” to be held in Ashgabat on 10-11 October 2024.
The International Forum is being held to mark the 300th birth anniversary of Magtymguly Faragi, a great Turkmen thinker, poet, and philosopher.
At the Forum, President Zardari will underline the importance of the values of peace, unity, and development for the region. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with the Turkmen leadership on the sidelines of the Forum.
Historical Background and Diplomatic Relations
Pakistan and Turkmenistan share a historically cordial relationship, rooted in mutual respect and cooperation. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established soon after Turkmenistan gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, both nations have worked to strengthen their bilateral ties across various sectors, recognizing the strategic importance of collaboration for regional stability and prosperity.
Political and Diplomatic Relations
Pakistan and Turkmenistan have enjoyed stable political relations characterized by frequent high-level visits and consultations. Both countries support each other on various international platforms, such as the United Nations (UN) and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The diplomatic exchanges between Islamabad and Ashgabat focus on promoting peace, stability, and economic growth in Central and South Asia, with an emphasis on regional connectivity and cooperation.
Economic Cooperation
Economic ties between Pakistan and Turkmenistan are expanding, particularly in energy, infrastructure, and trade. One of the most prominent joint projects is the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, a major initiative aimed at meeting the region’s growing energy needs. Once completed, TAPI will be a game-changer for Pakistan’s energy security by supplying natural gas from Turkmenistan’s rich reserves. The pipeline is also expected to promote economic interdependence and foster regional stability.
Both countries are exploring other areas of trade, with potential in sectors like agriculture, textiles, and minerals. Enhanced trade cooperation is seen as a way to increase economic resilience and bring prosperity to both nations.
Cultural and Educational Ties
Pakistan and Turkmenistan share cultural and historical commonalities, as both are part of the broader Islamic world and have deep-rooted traditions of hospitality and shared values. Cultural exchanges, including academic cooperation, are ongoing, with scholarships offered for students from both countries. Such exchanges strengthen people-to-people ties and mutual understanding, paving the way for more robust bilateral relations.
Cooperation in Energy, Agriculture, and Infrastructure
The energy sector remains a cornerstone of Pakistan-Turkmenistan relations, particularly with the TAPI gas pipeline, which symbolizes their shared vision for regional connectivity. Turkmenistan, as a major energy supplier, and Pakistan, as a growing consumer, have complementary interests in this sector. The development of infrastructure to support this partnership, such as road and railway networks, is also crucial to enhancing trade routes and connectivity.
Agricultural cooperation is another area with growth potential. Both countries are exploring ways to collaborate on modernizing agricultural techniques and boosting productivity to ensure food security and sustainable development.
Defense and Counter-Terrorism Cooperation
Both Pakistan and Turkmenistan recognize the importance of peace and security in achieving regional stability. There is ongoing cooperation in areas such as defense and counter-terrorism, with shared concerns over terrorism, extremism, and organized crime. Pakistan’s experience in counter-terrorism efforts provides valuable insights for Turkmenistan in addressing security challenges.
Convergence of Interests and Positive Role in the Region
Pakistan and Turkmenistan share several commonalities and converging interests. Both nations seek to promote economic growth, regional connectivity, and sustainable development. Their geographical locations give them strategic importance, with Pakistan acting as a gateway to South Asia and the Indian Ocean, while Turkmenistan serves as a key link to Central Asia.
Their joint efforts in projects like TAPI will not only benefit both nations but also contribute to broader regional development, including poverty elimination, job creation, and improved energy access for neighboring countries. By fostering stronger trade ties and political cooperation, Pakistan and Turkmenistan can play a pivotal role in promoting peace, stability, and economic prosperity across the region.
Future Prospects
The future of Pakistan-Turkmenistan relations looks promising, with both countries committed to deepening their ties in multiple sectors. Continued collaboration in energy, infrastructure, defense, and agriculture will benefit both nations and promote regional connectivity. As both Pakistan and Turkmenistan work together for the betterment of their people, their partnership will contribute significantly to the region’s future stability, peace, and economic progress.
Pakistan-Turkmenistan relations have evolved into a strong partnership, with cooperation across diverse sectors. Both nations’ commitment to fostering peace and development positions them as key players in shaping a more prosperous and interconnected Central and South Asia.
