Simon Milner, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for the Asia Pacific region, joined Talha Ahad from The Centrum Media (TCM) to discuss Meta’s work to support innovation and foster responsible digital citizenship among the youth in Pakistan, the creator economy, artificial intelligence (AI), Meta’s monetization plans for Pakistani creators, and much more.
Meta is set to significantly enhance Pakistan’s global connectivity with the installation of a 45,000-km-long undersea cable connecting Karachi to 33 other countries in Africa and the Middle East. Simon Milner detailed how this project, scheduled for completion by 2025, will drastically improve bandwidth, reduce latency, and boost overall connectivity.
This infrastructure investment is expected to greatly benefit Pakistani users, including content creators, by ensuring faster and more reliable access to Meta’s services like Facebook, Instagram, and the newly launched Meta AI. It will help everyone in Pakistan, especially creators, “provided that services are allowed to run freely here,” Milner emphasized, highlighting the project’s potential impact on the region’s digital ecosystem.
During the podcast, Simon Milner emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing AI innovation in Pakistan through the Llama AI initiative. Highlighting the success of a recent AI competition, Milner noted that Pakistan is one of the first countries to benefit from this initiative, which aims to empower local developers and drive technological advancements.
The competition, in partnership with NITB, Ignite, and the Ministry of IT, attracted over 100 applicants and showcased solutions like a literacy tool for non-literate individuals and an AI-driven system to reduce court case backlogs.
The winning team will represent Pakistan in Singapore, competing for a $100,000 grant alongside participants from 12 other Asian countries. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” added Milner, underscoring Meta’s role in nurturing Pakistan’s tech ecosystem and its potential to contribute significantly to the global technology landscape.
Milner discussed the company’s strategic initiatives with the Pakistani government. This partnership focuses on deploying AI to drive economic growth and enhance digital safety, particularly for the youth.
Highlighting the proactive approach from the government, Milner noted the enthusiasm of Minister Shaza, stating, “She was very excited about AI and the possibilities,” underscoring AI’s potential to streamline economic inefficiencies and create job opportunities. “All the meetings we have had with the government have been very engaged,” Milner added.
During the podcast, Milner announced significant progress towards enabling monetization for Pakistani creators, a feature that the country’s growing digital community has eagerly anticipated. Milner acknowledged the legal and banking challenges that have delayed the rollout, particularly the complexities involved in integrating local banking regulations with Meta’s global payment systems.
However, he assured that Meta is working diligently to overcome these hurdles. “We are making progress and are hopeful that we will be able to launch monetization soon,” Milner stated.
This development will open up new revenue streams for content creators in Pakistan, allowing them to earn from their digital content just as creators in other regions do. “This is a work in progress which is hopefully going to lead to a positive conclusion pretty soon,” Milner added, highlighting the importance of this initiative for Pakistan’s creator economy.
