Foreign Secretary Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi led the Pakistan delegation at the 31st ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial meeting held on 27 July in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
At the Meeting, the Foreign Secretary underscored Pakistan’s firm commitment to regional peace, security, and cooperation and the importance attached by Pakistan to its relations with ASEAN and its member states. He appreciated the positive role played by ASEAN in regional integration and prosperity.
The Foreign Secretary shared Pakistan’s perspective on regional conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region, stressing the need for dialogue and inclusiveness instead of bloc politics. He highlighted the plight of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and called for the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute by the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. He also presented Pakistan’s perspective on the regional hotspots including the situation in Gaza and Afghanistan.
On the sidelines of the ARF Ministerial meeting, the Foreign Secretary met with the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dato’ Astnaah Abdul Aziz; Vice Foreign Minister of China Sun Weidong; and Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Amran Mohamed Zin.
What is ASEAN? The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising ten Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Established on August 8, 1967, ASEAN aims to promote political and economic cooperation and regional stability among its members.

The region’s collective GDP ranks among the highest in the world, showcasing the economic prowess of ASEAN.
Development and Prosperity: ASEAN’s commitment to sustainable development is evident in its numerous initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for its citizens. Programs focused on education, health, and infrastructure development have yielded remarkable results, lifting millions out of poverty and fostering a more equitable society. The organization also emphasizes environmental sustainability, ensuring that economic progress does not come at the expense of the environment.
Political, Diplomatic, and Security Cooperation ASEAN member states cooperate closely on political, diplomatic, and security issues, adhering to principles of non-interference, consensus-building, and peaceful resolution of disputes. The ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) are key platforms where members collaborate on security issues, including counter-terrorism, maritime security, and disaster management. This cooperation enhances regional stability and builds trust among member states.
Pakistan’s Relations with ASEAN Pakistan enjoys friendly and cooperative relations with ASEAN, underscored by mutual respect and a shared vision for regional prosperity. As a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN since 1993, Pakistan actively participates in various ASEAN-led initiatives and forums, contributing to regional dialogue and cooperation.
How Pakistan Can Benefit from ASEAN Pakistan stands to gain significantly from enhanced engagement with ASEAN. By deepening economic ties, Pakistan can access ASEAN’s vast market, boosting trade and investment opportunities. Collaborations in science and technology, education, and tourism can further enhance Pakistan’s development trajectory. Additionally, Pakistan can learn from ASEAN’s successful regional integration model to foster greater cooperation within South Asia.
Way Forward for Pakistan To maximize its benefits from ASEAN, Pakistan should:

- Promote Cultural Exchange: Foster people-to-people connections through cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges, enhancing mutual understanding and goodwill.
ASEAN represents a model of regional cooperation and development, and Pakistan’s proactive engagement with ASEAN can lead to significant economic, political, and social benefits. By fostering stronger ties with this dynamic regional bloc, Pakistan can chart a path toward greater prosperity and regional harmony. ASEAN is a Beacon of Regional Cooperation and Prosperity.
