Pakistan Rejects Indian Prime Minister’s Belligerent Remarks

Pakistan rejects the Indian Prime Minister’s belligerent remarks made in Drass, Ladakh on 26 July 2024.

Bravado and jingoism undermine regional peace and are counter-productive for the resolution of long-standing disputes between Pakistan and India, especially the core dispute of Jammu and Kashmir.  

The Indian leaders’ rhetorical statements cannot deflect international attention from India’s heavy-handed approach to suppress the Kashmiri people’s just struggle for realization of their fundamental rights and freedoms, particularly their inalienable right to self-determination.

Instead of accusing others of terrorism, India should reflect on its campaign of orchestrating targeted assassinations, subversion, and terrorism in foreign territories.
Pakistan stands committed to its intent and ability to safeguard its sovereignty against any aggression, as exemplified by its robust response to India’s reckless incursion in February 2019.

While Pakistan is ready to counter India’s aggressive actions, it remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan’s Stance and Policy on Kashmir:

Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir issue is rooted in its commitment to the principles of justice, human rights, and self-determination. The official policy is to advocate for the right of the Kashmiri people to determine their future through a fair and impartial plebiscite, as mandated by United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. Pakistan considers the region of Jammu and Kashmir as an internationally recognized disputed territory, awaiting a final resolution by the wishes of its inhabitants.

The Issue of Indian Occupation and Atrocities

Pakistan categorically condemns what it terms the illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir by India. The Pakistani narrative asserts that since 1947, India has violated multiple UNSC resolutions that call for a plebiscite to allow the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide their fate. UNSC Resolution 47, adopted on April 21, 1948, specifically calls for a free and impartial plebiscite under the auspices of the United Nations.

Pakistan highlights numerous human rights violations committed by Indian security forces in the region. According to various reports and human rights organizations, the Indian military and paramilitary forces have been involved in extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, mass arrests, and sexual violence. These actions are viewed by Pakistan as attempts to suppress the legitimate struggle of the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination.

Human Rights Violations and Casualties

Over the years, the situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir has been marked by severe human rights violations. Estimates and reports suggest that:

• Tens of thousands of Kashmiris have been killed in the conflict since 1989.
• Thousands of people have been subjected to enforced disappearances.
• There have been numerous instances of mass arrests and detentions under laws like the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
• Reports of torture and inhumane treatment in detention centers are widespread.
• Women and girls have been victims of rape and sexual violence by Indian forces, which have been used as tools of intimidation and oppression.

International Response and Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts

Pakistan has consistently raised the issue of Kashmir on international platforms, including the United Nations General Assembly and the Human Rights Council. The Pakistani government continues to provide moral, political, and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people. Pakistan calls for the international community to take notice of the human rights abuses and to press India to comply with international law and UNSC resolutions.

In summary, Pakistan’s policy on Kashmir is driven by a commitment to support the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, highlighting the alleged human rights violations and atrocities committed by Indian forces. Pakistan continues to urge the international community to play a proactive role in ensuring justice and peace in the region, in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
