Islamabad is preparing to launch an electric tram bus service designed to enhance public transportation for its residents.
The decision was made during a meeting at the CDA headquarters, chaired by Muhammad Ali Randhawa, who serves as both Chairman of the CDA and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad.
As part of the initiative, work has already begun to upgrade 140 existing bus stops throughout the city, with plans to construct over 200 new stops in total.
Chairman Randhawa emphasized that delivering state-of-the-art transport options for Islamabad’s citizens is a top priority. He also directed that the feasibility study for the tram system be completed as soon as possible.
The proposed electric trams will be designed with multiple compartments to accommodate more passengers and will include features to ensure accessibility for women and differently-abled individuals. The ongoing feasibility report is also exploring sustainable financial models and the potential for public-private partnerships to support the project’s long-term success.
Additionally, the CDA is exploring potential collaborations with private sector partners to help bring the tram project to fruition. Clear targets and timelines will be established to ensure the project moves forward efficiently.
Currently, Islamabad’s electric bus service is already serving over 90,000 passengers daily, earning praise for its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and reliable operations. Building on this momentum, the CDA plans to further enhance the network by upgrading 140 existing bus stops and constructing more than 200 new ones, all equipped with digital boards to display schedules, advertisements, and safety information.
