In a move to transform Islamabad into a green-fuel city, the federal government has announced that all fuel stations and key locations in the capital will be equipped with electric vehicle (EV) charging points by 2030.
The decision was taken during the fifth meeting of the Steering Committee on the Electric Vehicle Policy, chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan.
The meeting reviewed progress on the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–30 and highlighted Islamabad’s leading role in reducing vehicular emissions. It was noted that around 2.2 million EV motorcycles and cars are expected to be on Pakistani roads within five years, supported by over 3,000 charging stations nationwide by the end of this year.
Officials from key ministries, the Federal Board of Revenue, the State Bank of Pakistan, and the Capital Development Authority attended the session. Discussions focused on subsidies, vehicle emissions checks, and technical aspects like battery performance under local weather conditions.
The policy aims to cut fuel imports and combat environmental pollution. Haroon Akhtar said that the environmental impact would be measured using global standards, with carbon credit opportunities also being explored. The government reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable, green transport development across Pakistan.
