In light of potential Indian cyber-attacks, the Cabinet Division has issued a security advisory to all government divisions, warning of a targeted phishing campaign aimed at Pakistani officials.
The advisory outlines a sophisticated cyber threat reportedly linked to an Indian threat actor known as “SideWinder,” which has been active in the region for several years.
According to the advisory, the cyber-attack employs phishing emails to infiltrate official communication networks. The attackers impersonate sensitive Pakistani institutions, including cyber security directorates of key government departments, to deceive recipients and gain unauthorized access to systems. The campaign is specifically designed to target individuals working in various state institutions.
The advisory highlights that these cyber operations are part of a broader pattern of threats allegedly orchestrated by SideWinder, a known Indian-affiliated group that has previously engaged in similar espionage campaigns in South Asia. The use of social engineering and deceptive email tactics are central to the group’s strategy, making the attacks harder to detect and prevent.
To counter these threats, the advisory recommends immediate implementation of technical safeguards, including email filtering solutions, malware detection systems, and spam filters. It also calls for regular security audits and proactive monitoring of email servers to identify suspicious activities in real-time.
