Prof. Dr. Adib Rizvi, the founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), has been honored with the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Award for his exceptional contributions to medical science in South Asia.

The prestigious award was presented at a ceremony in New Delhi, where Dr. Sanjay Nagra, co-chair of the BMJ Advisory Board, accepted it on Dr. Rizvi’s behalf. Dr. Nagra commended Dr. Rizvi’s vision in creating a healthcare model in Pakistan that provides free, accessible, and equitable treatment, describing it as an inspiration for developing countries.

Speaking via Zoom, Dr. Rizvi thanked BMJ for the recognition and applauded its ongoing efforts in advancing medical education and research. He also urged nations in the region to set aside political differences and work together to uplift marginalized communities and improve public health systems.

Dr. Rizvi is a renowned Pakistani transplant surgeon and humanitarian who has revolutionized healthcare in Pakistan, especially in the areas of urology and organ transplantation. His journey began in 1970, when he established an eight-bed urology ward at Karachi’s Civil Hospital—an initiative that eventually led to the founding of SIUT, now the largest center for urology, nephrology, and transplantation in South Asia.

Today, SIUT provides completely free-of-cost treatment to over a million patients annually, offering services such as dialysis, lithotripsy, oncology care, and organ transplants.

A passionate advocate for ethical medical practices, Dr. Rizvi played a critical role in the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (2010), which legalized cadaveric organ donation and helped curb illegal organ trade in Pakistan.

Dr. Rizvi’s tireless work has earned him numerous accolades, including:

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award (1998)
