The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) has set up a company to promote advancements in Science & Technology, MoS&T officials informed the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology on Wednesday.
The company will act as a corporate body and invite international experts to help achieve its objectives. Also, the government has appointed a serving general of the Armed Forces to lead the new company under the Science and Technology Division. The office of this institution will be located at NUST. According to the Secretary of Science and Technology, the company will function as a research and development agency focused on advancing scientific progress.
Officials briefed the committee that the company was registered about a month ago and its board will be formed soon. The meeting participants urged authorities to prioritize constituting the company’s board and legislative framework.
The committee discussed the digitalization of the Pakistan Standards Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), which has yet to fully digitize its fine payment system. The committee expressed frustration over the delays and warned that failure to complete the process within two months would lead to more problems.
Committee members also raised concerns over misleading advertisements for milk substitutes and unsafe food products like poisoned pickles.
The meeting concluded with discussions on the potential merging of the Ministry of Science’s staff with other divisions on recommendations of the Rightsizing Committee. However, the ministry argued that the technical staff could be better utilized if transferred to science-related fields.
