There is a street corner in Clairwood, south of Durban, where the extraordinary story of Nobel Peace Prize winner Navanethem “Navi” Pillay began.

At the corner of Houghton and Horsham roads, where Pillay grew up, there are no grand monuments to the woman who would become one of the world’s most respected human rights lawyers.

But on Friday, October 9, this working-class neighbourhood had every reason to celebrate.

Pillay, 85, who rose from poverty to become the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and an international judge, was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to peace and international law.

For Clairwood residents, the announcement was personal.

“We are proud residents of Clairwood and are also very proud of Navi Pillay for putting Clairwood on the global map,” resident Lilly Govendor told IOL.

From humble beginnings

Born in 1941, Pillay was the fifth of eight children in a poor Clairwood family. She grew up under apartheid, in a home without books, newspapers or a radio.

With community support and scholarships, she studied at the University of Natal, graduating with a law degree in 1965.
