  • 1m ago (10:45 GMT)In Gaza, Palestinians reclaim small moments of dignity amid the ceasefireBy Maram HumaidReporting from Deir el-Balah, GazaLate on October 8, while everyone else in the house was asleep, I lay awake scrolling through my phone and journalist chat groups for updates. There were conflicting accounts from the ceasefire talks – of progress, setbacks, hope and doubt. As my phone battery dwindled, I finally drifted off to sleep, stirred occasionally by distant shelling that told me what my phone couldn’t.When I awoke just before dawn on October 9, my wi-fi was dead. I rushed to the roof, searching for an eSIM signal. The sun was rising as updates loaded onto my phone, and there it was: “Announcement of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza – to take effect within hours.”Read more of this piece from Gaza here.Click here to share on social media

  • 46m ago (10:00 GMT)OpinionGaza’s traumatised children urgently need the hope education offersBy Nada HamdonaWhen the ceasefire in Gaza was announced, I experienced a range of mixed emotions.I felt joy that the bombs had finally stopped, but also dread that they could resume at any time. I felt optimistic that we could go back to normal life, but also anxious that this could once again be short-lived.As an English teacher, I hope to see education restored as soon as possible. Education is the only means of reviving hope and helping children start to overcome the trauma of two years of genocide. It can provide a sense of normalcy and purpose. That is why it ought to be Gaza’s top priority.Books, pens and paper are not just school supplies. They are a lifeline that can help the children of Gaza triumph over war, destruction and immense loss. They are critical tools that can sustain their perseverance and willpower to live, learn and see a bright future.Read the full opinion piece here.Israeli attack completely destroys Gaza’s Yafa School, dozens displacedA view shows the rubble after the Israeli army carried out a nighttime attack on Yafa School, located in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood in the east of the Gaza Strip [File: Khames Alrefi/Anadolu Agency]Click here to share on social media

He went on to describe how Hezbollah would then push to postpone the Lebanese parliamentary election in May 2026 during a war, deepening the political crisis in the country.Lebanon’s government had issued a decree to disarm Hezbollah, which the group rejected as a “grave sin”, saying it would treat it as if it did not exist.Barrack said Beirut’s push to make Lebanese forces the sole military force in the country remains closer to aspiration than reality due to what he called Hezbollah’s political dominance and “the fear of civil unrest”.TOPSHOT - US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack listens to a question during a joint press conference following his meeting with Lebanon's president at the Presidential Palace in Baabda on August 18, 2025.Tom Barrack [File: AFP]Click here to share on social media

In the video, Fletcher says: “For the last 25 or 32 minutes, we’ve driven through twisted concrete, broken buildings, rubble, dust. Today is the first day we can get up this road because we’ve cleared extra sections of it of the bodies and the broken buildings and broken lives that are scattered around us.”“What is it that people need at this point that will cut through? • 3h ago (07:45 GMT)Israelis want ceasefire to holdBy Nour OdehReporting from Amman, Jordan. Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank. The Israeli public supports this ceasefire agreement and wants to see it maintained. They want to see the return of the bodies of all captives .Even the stock exchange in Tel Aviv reacted negatively when Israel resumed bombardment of Gaza. However, Israeli politicians were competing among themselves as to who would have a more radical statement about the need to resume war, not just those in the coalition, but also in the opposition. All of that was turned on its head when the US signalled to Israel that it was time to wrap it up, resume the ceasefire, open the crossings and allow aid in. It tells us what everybody in the region understands – that it is Washington that calls the shots, and that Netanyahu, and any Israeli government for that matter, cannot really go up against the White House, not on substantive matters where the US signals that it has a vested interest.

  • 4h ago (06:00 GMT)AnalysisWith Hezbollah weakened, the Lebanese state struggles to fill the voidBy Ali HarbIsrael is holding south Lebanon at a proverbial gunpoint.Violations of the ceasefire that started with targeting what it claimed were Hezbollah members and positions have now moved on to openly targeting civilian infrastructure.Hezbollah is on the retreat. It knows that its popular base cannot tolerate another war.A recent statement by the US military’s Central Command said the Lebanese military confiscated more than 10,000 Hezbollah rockets in the area south of the Litani River, near the Israeli border.Still, Israel is not satisfied, and it is continuing its near-daily attacks across the country while enforcing de facto ethnic cleansing of border communities by preventing reconstruction. With the Hezbollah military option off the table, many advocates in south Lebanon have been wondering: Where is the state? In his inauguration speech earlier this year, President Joseph Aoun promised to work on a military, diplomatic, economic and defence strategy to protect Lebanon from Israeli abuses. But so far, the country has been defenceless with no viable options to confront Israel in any arena.

  • 5h ago (05:30 GMT)Palestinians in Gaza find hope as ceasefire tension easesBy Tareq Abu AzzoumReporting from Deir el-BalahIt was a very difficult day for many Palestinians when they saw tensions spiralling between Hamas and Israel. Following US intervention and pressure from mediators, people started to get a sense of relief again on the ground and feel more confident about the possibility that the ceasefire might hold. It seems that people on the ground believe the situation will improve in the coming days as long as mediators continue to exert more pressure on both sides to push them to commit and adhere to the terms of the agreement. This was quite obvious once Israel started to allow aid into Gaza after it decided to halt it. It was seen as a key change despite growing calls from hardline figures within the current government.Click here to share on social media

Because there were so many bodies under so much rubble, there was so much confusion after two years of genocide; it was going to be very difficult for anybody to deliver the bodies of the captives,” Gunness told AJ+.“So Israel has a pretext to call off the plan, to reimpose the blockade, to restart the genocide if it wants to, and the Palestinians in Gaza really don’t have the wherewithal to prevent it.”

  • 8h ago (02:30 GMT)AnalysisDespite ceasefire, Israel openly uses aid as weapon against Palestinians Ali Harb. Nearly a year after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over war crimes charges, including using starvation as a weapon of war, the Israeli prime minister continues to threaten Palestinians with restricting aid.On Sunday, the Israeli government temporarily halted the flow of humanitarian assistance, and for days, it has been partially blocking the aid to pressure Hamas to locate and transfer the bodies of slain captives.Blocking aid appears to be a clear violation of the ceasefire. It is also a breach of international humanitarian law.The ICC Statute bars “using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare by depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including wilfully impeding relief supplies as provided for under the Geneva Conventions”.Moreover, UN investigators concluded in a report last month that Israel was using hunger as part of its genocidal campaign in Gaza.“Israel’s use of starvation as a method of war through the total siege on the Gaza Strip has had devastating impacts on children as well, resulting in starvation, alarmingly high rates of acute malnutrition, increasing risks of outbreak of diseases such as cholera and chronic diarrhoea and significant excess mortality,” the report said.Even after the ceasefire, Israel has continued to block aid to Gaza, while blaming other parties, including Hamas and the UN, for the humanitarian crisis in the territory.GazaChildren wait in line to receive food distributed by a charity in the Nuseirat refugee camp, amid the Israeli blockade, September 4 [AA Almaghari/Anadolu]Click here to share on social media
