Lahore is gearing up to launch its first-ever electric tram, marking another major milestone in the city’s shift toward eco-friendly public transport. Following the successful operation of the Metro Bus, Orange Line Train, and electric buses, the electric tram is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility.

The first tram — imported from China — has arrived and is being assembled at the Ali Town Depot. The tram features three coaches and can carry up to 250 passengers at a time. Powered entirely by electricity, it boasts a fast charging time of just 10 minutes, allowing it to run up to 27 kilometers on a single charge.

In the initial phase, the tram will operate on Canal Road as part of a pilot project to assess its performance in local traffic and weather conditions. If successful, the service could be extended to other busy corridors of the city.

Punjab’s transport officials say the tram project is part of a broader strategy to reduce air pollution, traffic congestion, and carbon emissions. Lahore’s rapidly growing population and vehicle numbers have made sustainable transport options more urgent than ever.

The introduction of electric trams aligns with Pakistan’s climate goals and growing emphasis on renewable energy solutions in the transport sector.
