Islamabad’s Safe City project is set for a major upgrade with the addition of 3,200 new AI-powered cameras, enhancing surveillance and crime detection across the federal capital.
Director General of Safe City Islamabad, Shakir Hussain Dawar, announced the expansion during a media briefing on Thursday. He said the project’s PC-1, worth Rs. 17.4 billion, has been submitted to modernize surveillance using artificial intelligence.
Currently, 2,758 cameras monitor the city, with 700 equipped with AI. The new cameras will feature facial recognition, license plate detection, and traffic violation monitoring, allowing near-total coverage of Islamabad. Officials say this will help maintain digital records of every individual entering the city.
To support the expansion, seven high-powered servers are being integrated into the system, boosting the performance of both new and existing cameras. Plans are also underway to install 14 additional servers to enable older cameras to adopt AI functions.
DG Dawar highlighted that AI surveillance has already helped identify 77 criminal gangs, with 32 arrested so far. Advanced rooftop cameras will soon be able to capture clear images of people inside vehicles.
The project reflects growing reliance on AI to improve urban safety and real-time policing.
