  • 9h ago (20:45 GMT)ExplainerWhat’s the latest with the ceasefire talks?
    • A renewed diplomatic flurry has ignited hope of a long-elusive ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, with Israel sending a high-ranking delegation to Qatar for negotiations.
    • Meanwhile, Biden and Netanyahu held what is likely to be one of their final calls before the US president leaves office on January 20.
    • Netanyahu’s office said he discussed “progress” in the talks with Biden, while the White House said Biden stressed the need to reach a deal.
    • Speaking earlier in the day on CNN, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the Biden administration would use every last day in office to reach a deal.
    • Officials from UA President-elect Trump’s incoming administration also reiterated there would be “hell to pay” if a deal was not reached before Trump takes office. Vice President-elect Vance said on Fox News that Trump’s threat means he would “enable the Israelis to eliminate the last remnant of Hamas and its leadership”.

  • 10h ago (20:00 GMT)The Israeli far right has been against a ceasefire deal for some timeReporting from Amman, JordanAl Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because the Israeli government has banned it from operating in Israel and the occupied West Bank. There’s a lot of turmoil within Benjamin Netanyahu’s own government.Remember that when the first and only ceasefire deal took place, you had members of his own coalition, like Itamar Ben-Gvir, vote against it.Now you have the finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who’s been quite an outspoken opponent of any sort of ceasefire deal. There is a large school of thought in Israel that if Netanyahu agrees to a deal, his government will collapse. So there were reports earlier in the day that Netanyahu held a meeting with members of the far right, including Smotrich, to try and warm him up to the idea of the ceasefire deal. The far right has been against this for some time, saying that it would be a victory for Hamas and that they would be rewarding the Palestinian group.Benjamin Netanyahu, nonetheless, still decided to send his negotiating team to give them a mandate and let them stay another day in Doha for these talks.Ultimately, this is going to be Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision.Click here to share on social media

  • 10h ago (19:30 GMT)Israeli negotiation team will stay in Doha for another day of talksReporting from Amman, JordanAl Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because the Israeli government has banned it from operating in Israel and the occupied West Bank.Even though US President Joe Biden had been pushing his Israeli counterparts for a ceasefire, those efforts have largely failed.PM Benjamin Netanyahu said he would do things his way, with or without American support. But now there’s a wild card here. US President-elect Donald Trump is coming to office in just eight days, and he said he wants a ceasefire before taking office. At the same time, the Israeli negotiating teams are still in Doha and expected to stay in the Qatari capital for yet another day of these negotiations.Netanyahu said that he spoke about the mandate he had given his negotiating team, but that has not been released to the public. We don’t exactly know what the Israelis are putting on the table, but we do know that they have several red lines and non-negotiables that they have been discussing throughout the last year.Click here to share on social media
  • 10h ago (19:15 GMT)WATCH: Could Israel be planning a Gaza ‘ceasefire’ for optics only?American journalist Ryan Grim says it may be risky for Israel to reject a ceasefire in Gaza, even if it is simply to placate US President-elect Donald Trump.Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu bet his political future on waiting for Trump to assume office, argues Grim, co-founder of Drop Site News.Grim tells host Steve Clemons that Netanyahu’s gambit paid off, and now he may not be able to reject a ceasefire after January 20 – inauguration day for Trump, who has promised that “all hell will break out” in the Middle East if he does not get his way.“Whether it holds or whether it’s just something that’s announced so that Trump can celebrate it and say he’s moving on” is the bigger question, Grim says.Watch the latest episode of The Bottom Line:https://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.679.0_en.html#goog_402188035Play Video24:07Could Israel be planning a Gaza ‘ceasefire’ for optics only?Click here to share on social media

  • 16h ago (14:00 GMT)Gaza and the cycle of transgenerational traumaHere’s more from our interview with Liz Allcock, the head of protection at Medical Aid for Palestinians.Al Jazeera: At some point in the future, Gaza is going to have to start to rebuild and its young population is expected to play a key role in that. What are the concerns about the impact that the mental trauma they’ve gone through is going to have on their ability to rebuild Gaza eventually?Liz Allcock: [That is] absolutely right. I think it’s worth highlighting the fact that prior to the current conflict, more than half of children in Gaza were displaying signs of PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] many years ago.So the baseline was already low, the children were already in a precarious situation and that has now been compounded by the fear and the trauma that has been experienced as a result of the constant bombardment, the multiple repeated forced displacement, the loss of life including entire families and being witness to the unbearable horrors that the children here are being witness to.So we’re pretty much starting from scratch very early on. But what we’ve been able to do with the help of the really amazing and excellent national mental health workforce here in Gaza is to try to rebuild a system that has really been totally decimated and destroyed so that we are able to provide support so the children are able to deal with the scars that have been inflicted upon them. But I think it’s important to remember that this is going to be transgenerational trauma and that without early intervention, it will have catastrophic implications for generations to come.Click here to share on social media
  • 16h ago (13:55 GMT)Mental health crisis amongst Gaza children ‘unparalleled and unprecedented’We’ve spoken to Liz Allcock, the head of protection at Medical Aid for Palestinians who is currently in Deir el-Balah, in central Gaza, about the trauma faced by children in the besieged and bombarded territory.Al Jazeera: How could organisations like yours hope to be able to provide aid to the numbers of children who need it?Liz Allcock: The answer is simple: With great difficulty. The catastrophe that has been inflicted upon children in Gaza for the last 15 months has really created an unparalleled and unprecedented mental health crisis amongst children of all ages. What we can hope to achieve is not to avoid the trauma that has been inflicted, but to try to mitigate or minimise the impact of that trauma, the violence and the abuse that is being perpetrated against children.Al Jazeera: Children in Gaza need mental health support, but they also need psychosocial support. Can you describe what that means and how it affects children?Allcock: Psychosocial wellbeing is a key tenant of healthy childhood development and it’s entirely lacking at the moment due to the situation that is being faced by children here. What we’re trying to do as humanitarians is provide a semblance of normality amidst the horror that children are experiencing on a daily basis. So that might be providing a space for recreational activity to relieve stress, to help children express their emotions in a healthy way, as well as the more tailored and specialised support for those with really acute symptoms of distress, such as the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and other more chronic conditions through group therapy, individual therapy and also specialised treatment, including the provision of psychotropic medication.Click here to share on social media

  • 19h ago (11:00 GMT)Analysis‘Pressure on Israel, not Hamas, to secure a deal’Israeli political commentator Ori Goldberg tells Al Jazeera there are “real hopes” of a ceasefire deal being achieved, which has to do with Israel’s stance in the negotiations rather than Hamas.“I think the pressure is on Israel to deliver for [US President-elect] Donald Trump, not for Hamas. Hamas has been very steady in its demands and in its position towards the negotiation pretty much since the war started,” Goldberg said.“But what I think is that Israel is weakening, and that’s not surprising. Israel is in a weak position. It has absolutely nothing to show for its 15 months of genocidal war.
