Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has granted the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) a construction license for the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5) in Mianwali, officials announced on Friday.
PAEC submitted its application for the license in April, accompanied by a Preliminary Safety Assessment Report (PSAR) and additional documents addressing key aspects such as nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management, and security protocols.
After a detailed review and verification of compliance with national and international safety standards, PNRA approved the license.
C-5 is a state-of-the-art, third-generation Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) based on the Chinese Hualong (HPR1000) design. It features advanced safety measures, including a double-shell containment structure and a reactor-filtered venting system, with a design lifespan of 60 years.
The reactor incorporates innovative technology and is the third of its kind in Pakistan, following the successful operation of Karachi-based K-2 and K-3 reactors
Once operational, C-5 will be the largest nuclear power plant in the country, capable of generating 1,200 megawatts of electricity, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s energy needs and its national grid.
