The majority of Pakistani youth are not interested in permanently leaving the country, according to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos Pakistan.

The survey, carried out between September 20 and 27, 2024, included over 1,600 participants aged 18 to 34. When asked if they were considering moving abroad for good, 74% of respondents stated they had no such plans.

Meanwhile, 26% said they would consider relocating abroad if given the opportunity. Among those open to emigrating, the Middle East was the most preferred destination. Saudi Arabia topped the list, attracting 30% of potential migrants, followed by Dubai at 20%.

Other preferred destinations included the United Kingdom (9%), Canada (8%), the United States (8%), Europe (5%), Australia (3%), Turkey (2%), Qatar (2%), Italy (2%), and Germany (1%).

The survey revealed notable differences in migration interest based on geography and socio-economic class. Youth from Islamabad showed the highest inclination to move abroad, with 46% expressing this desire. Other regional statistics included 35% from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 27% from Punjab, 21% from Balochistan, and 20% from Sindh.

Socioeconomic status also played a significant role. Among those surveyed, 36% from the upper-middle and privileged classes expressed an intention to emigrate, compared to 28% from the middle class and 23% from the underprivileged class.
