Zamir Ahmed Awan runs the Global Silk Route Research Alliance, a think tank he started in Islamabad. He studied engineering at Shanghai University in the 1980s, then spent six years in Beijing as Pakistan's science counsellor, from 2010 until 2016, working on science and higher education cooperation between the two countries. After that he came home and joined the China Studies Centre at NUST. He retired from there.
