Hutchison Ports Pakistan plans $76m upgrade to boost terminal efficiency

Hutchison Ports Pakistan is set to invest $76 million over the next two years in a major upgrade of its deep-water container terminal, with the programme combining new cargo-handling equipment, fleet electrification and additional infrastructure.

The operator has also approached the Government of Pakistan for additional land to establish a Centralised Examination Area, which it said would form part of the broader expansion programme.

The proposed facility is aligned with the objectives of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs (MOMA), Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and the government to develop a high-capacity logistics hub aimed at improving trade efficiency and supporting regional commercial activity.

Under the investment programme, Hutchison Ports Pakistan will add two electric remote-controlled Quay Cranes (QCs), 17 electric remote-controlled Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes (RTGCs), 70 e-trucks and 50 trailers.

The terminal has already begun receiving the new equipment. During 2026, it took delivery of 20 e-trucks and 10 trailers, in addition to a reach stacker and an empty handler.

The company said the transition towards electric equipment is intended to support both operational growth and Hutchison Ports Group’s global sustainability objectives, with fleet electrification contributing to supply-chain decarbonisation in Pakistan.

CS Kim, CEO of Hutchison Ports Pakistan, said the investment reflected the company’s commitment to Pakistan’s economic growth and maritime sector.

According to Kim, the company is working with MOMA, KPT and the government to support the prime minister’s vision of developing Pakistan into a premier transhipment hub.

He said the use of advanced technology would enable faster turnaround times, improve cargo clearance and help create long-term economic value for the country.
