PSMA says the country holds 3.4 million tonnes of sugar stocks as of July 15, with 1.158 million tonnes expected to remain surplus by the start of the new crushing season on November 15
The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has written to Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, requesting immediate permission to export 585,000 tonnes of surplus sugar.
According to the letters, the country held 3.4 million metric tons of sugar stocks as of July 15, 2026, figures reconciled and agreed upon by the FBR and the sugar industry.
Average monthly consumption stands at 567,426 metric tons.

By the start of the new crushing season on November 15, the country will hold a surplus stock of 1.158 million metric tons of sugar, according to PSMA.
A bumper sugarcane crop is expected again in the upcoming season, which PSMA said will produce around 8 million metric tons of sugar, far exceeding domestic requirements.
Based on the reconciled figures, PSMA has requested the government grant permission to export the 585,000 tonnes of surplus sugar immediately, and later authorise the export of stocks held in strategic reserves within one month of the start of the upcoming crushing season.
PSMA spokesperson expressed concern over the uncertainty facing sugarcane farmers as the September sowing season approaches. Mills will be unable to purchase more cane from farmers or offer better rates until the surplus stock currently sitting in warehouses is exported, the spokesperson said.

Better and timely payments to sugarcane growers over the past two years have encouraged farmers to cultivate improved cane varieties, resulting in higher per-acre yield and sugar content, PSMA said.
However, PSMA warned that this will only translate into continued growth if exporting the current surplus gives farmers an incentive to cultivate the new crop. Otherwise, it said, sugarcane cultivation and sugar production will decline in the coming years, forcing the country to import sugar at the cost of valuable foreign exchange.
