Rawalpindi Railway Station has been upgraded with modern facilities and an improved security system, transforming the nearly 145-year-old structure into a “Safe and Smart Railway Station.”
Under the upgrade, platforms have been reconstructed, and modern stalls for tea, snacks, newspapers, and books have been installed. Waiting areas have been improved, a Commercially Important Person (CIP) lounge has been added, and washrooms have been cleaned and upgraded.
A modern security system has been introduced, including CCTV cameras across the station, parking areas, and entry and exit points. Passenger luggage is screened using advanced scanning machines, with contents visible on large monitoring screens.
An improved cleanliness system is also in place, with Rawalpindi Waste Management Company staff engaged in continuous cleaning operations.
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi said the station now offers an airport-like experience for passengers.
He added that the new system, installed in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), includes a network of 184 CCTV cameras, making it the first station in the country with such a monitoring system.
The system allows continuous surveillance of the station, surrounding areas, and reservation offices, and also supports staff performance monitoring.
The minister said modern CIP lounges are being developed at major stations, along with separate waiting areas for women and families, free Wi-Fi, and ATM machines.
