The modernization of China has been an evolving pursuit of the Chinese people over generations. In 2023, the country embarked on its first full year of implementing the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, charting the course for the next stage on China’s modernization path. Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

Xi inspected south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on returning to China after a state visit to Vietnam. He went to the capital city of Nanning and Laibin City, where he visited places including the China-ASEAN Information Harbor Co., Ltd., a multi-ethnic community and a sugarcane base. During the inspection, Xi said the coastal region should promote an ocean-oriented economy and further open up to enhance connectivity between China and ASEAN countries. He also called on the region, which has the largest population of ethnic minorities in China, to further enhance ethnic unity.

In 2023, China’s diplomacy was in full swing. From bilateral and multilateral meetings to regional and global forums, China promoted common prosperity and a more just international order by advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, an idea which is deeply rooted in the country’s unique path to modernization.At the first China-Central Asia Summit in May, China and the five Central Asian countries reached over 100 cooperation agreements, pushing forward the building of an even closer China-Central Asia community with a shared future.In July, 6,500 athletes from 113 countries and regions gathered in Chengdu to compete in the 31st summer edition of the FISU World University Games. The 19th Asian Games, a multi-sports event hosted in Hangzhou in September and October, was attended by over 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions and was hailed as “an unprecedented success.”The third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in October, the most significant celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), yielded a total of 458 outcomes, with cooperation agreements worth $97.2 billion concluded.Head-of-state overseas visits in 2023 kicked off with President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia. The Chinese and Russian presidents drew up a blueprint for the growth of bilateral ties after holding friendly and fruitful talks. The highly anticipated Xi-Biden meeting in San Francisco concluded with important agreements, playing a key role in reshaping relations between the world’s two largest economies.China endeavored to contribute to the rise of the Global South in 2023. It supported and welcomed the expansion of both the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS. It also initiated a series of plans to help Africa realize modernization and signed BRI cooperation documents with all 22 Arab nations and the League of Arab States in 2023. In addition, win-win cooperation between China and Latin American countries yielded fruitful results.In 2023, China upheld its stance on solving conflicts through dialogue. In March, mediated by China, Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies. As the Ukraine crisis continued and a new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict unfolded, China issued position papers advocating dialogue to achieve peace. China’s diplomatic practices in 2023 demonstrate that it always has been and continues to be a supporter of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of the international order.
