{"id":6399,"date":"2024-08-06T15:00:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T15:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=6399"},"modified":"2024-08-06T15:00:24","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T15:00:24","slug":"world-reacts-to-bangladesh-pm-sheikh-hasinas-removal-from-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=6399","title":{"rendered":"World reacts to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina\u2019s removal from power"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country after weeks of deadly anti-government protests.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/12421288-1722867336.jpg?resize=730%2C410&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Bangladesh Hasina\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Video Duration&nbsp;03 minutes 13 seconds03:13<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Faje.io%2Ffc32nw\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=World%20reacts%20to%20Bangladesh%20PM%20Sheikh%20Hasina%E2%80%99s%20removal%20from%20power&amp;source=sharethiscom&amp;related=sharethis&amp;via=AJEnglish&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Faje.io%2Ffc32nw\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/fc32nw\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bangladesh\u2019s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2024\/8\/5\/bangladesh-protests-live-army-chief-to-address-nation-amid-new-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resigned<\/a>&nbsp;and fled the country after weeks of protests against her government in which hundreds of people were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasina, 76, quit on Monday after last month\u2019s student-led protests against a quota system for government jobs turned into a popular call for her removal in the worst political crisis to hit during her 15-year rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As tens of thousands of people surrounded government offices and residences in the capital, Dhaka, Hasina fled in an army helicopter with her sister to India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an address to the nation, Bangladesh\u2019s army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/5\/bangladesh-pm-hasina-quits-and-flees-as-protestors-storm-palace-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interim government<\/a>&nbsp;would run the country of 170 million people, without providing details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some reactions to Hasina\u2019s removal from power and the unrest in the country:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"opposition-bangladesh-nationalist-party\">Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the main opposition party who lives in exile in the United Kingdom, said on X that \u201cHasina\u2019s resignation proves the power of the people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/INTERACTIVE-HASINA_TIMELINE-1722870336.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C958&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-HASINA_TIMELINE\" class=\"wp-image-3097378\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTogether, let\u2019s rebuild Bangladesh into a democratic and developed nation, where the rights and freedoms of all people are protected,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"united-kingdom\">United Kingdom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s spokesperson said his office was concerned by the violence and the \u201csignificant loss of life, including of students, children and law enforcement officers\u201d, saying it was \u201ccompletely unacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe right to peaceful protest must be protected and never subject to violence and we call on the authorities to release all peaceful protesters and ensure due process is followed for those charged and prosecuted,\u201d according to a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: \u201cThe people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bangladeshi-diaspora-in-the-uk\">Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Whitechapel, a London neighbourhood home to a large Bangladeshi community, many took to the streets to celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waving their national flag and honking car horns, they chanted: \u201cBangladesh! Bangladesh!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBangladesh has achieved its second independence now,\u201d said Abu Sayem, 50. \u201cWe actually got our independence first in 1971, but autocrat Sheikh Hasina was ruling the country forcibly. She has snatched away our rights. It is vital that an orderly and peaceful transition towards a democratically elected government is ensured, in full respect of human rights and democratic principles,\u201d foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"united-states\">United States<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The US&nbsp; commended Bangladesh\u2019s army for its \u201crestraint\u201d, while also calling on all sides to \u201crefrain from further violence\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToo many lives have been lost over the past several weeks, and we urge calm and restraint in the days ahead,\u201d Department of State spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller also said the US had seen reports that the army refused pressure to crack down further on student-led demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it is true in fact that the army resisted calls to crack down on lawful protesters, that would be a positive development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked if the military should choose the next leadership, Miller said, \u201cWe want to see the Bangladeshi people decide the future Bangladeshi government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House called for respecting democratic rights in Bangladesh. \u201cWe urge that the interim government formation be democratic and inclusive. We commend the Army for the restraint they have shown today,\u201d a White House spokesperson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on X that Hasina\u2019s violent reaction to legitimate protests made her continued rule untenable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI applaud the brave protestors &amp; demand justice for those killed. It\u2019s critical to establish a balanced interim government that respects the rights of all &amp; sets up democratic elections swiftly,\u201d Schumer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"united-nations\">United Nations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged calm and highlighted the need for a \u201cpeaceful, orderly and democratic transition\u201d, his spokesman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[Guterres] stands in full solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and calls for the full respect of their human rights,\u201d said Farhan Haq, the spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe continues to underscore the need for a full, independent, impartial and transparent investigation into all acts of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irene Khan, the UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression and opinion, said the army has a \u201cvery tough job ahead\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are all hoping that the transition would be peaceful and that there will be accountability for all the human rights violations that have taken place recently, including the killing of about 300 people in the last three weeks,\u201d Khan told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBangladesh has, of course, an enormous task ahead. It is not the poster child of sustainable development any more. The previous government had driven this country into despair, and there would be a lot of hard work to do to build it up, but most of all, I think it\u2019s extremely important that the army respect human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"canada\">Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said her country \u201ccondemns the human rights violations, deaths, torture, arbitrary arrests and lethal force\u201d used in response to the protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring this transition, we urge all parties to respect and uphold democratic institutions and processes and the rule of law,\u201d Joly said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"amnesty-international\">Amnesty International<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s South Asia researcher Taqbir Huda told Democracy Now that while Hasina has resigned, much of the violence \u201ccould have been avoided\u201d if her government had been more responsive to the students\u2019 demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the military has taken over and cautioned: \u201cGiven Bangladesh\u2019s history with military dictatorships \u2026 it is really important to stress that this must be a time-bound measure until \u2026 governance can be reissued.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"india\">India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s government has not yet commented on Hasina\u2019s resignation, it issued a \u201chigh alert\u201d along its 4,096km (2,545-mile) border with Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modi\u2019s government was reported to have close ties with the Hasina-led Awami League government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sri-lanka\">Sri Lanka<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said in a statement on X: \u201cWe believe in the resilience and unity of the Bangladeshi nation and hope for a swift return to peace and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMay the people of Bangladesh find the strength to overcome these challenges and emerge even stronger,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"russia\">Russia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that \u201cMoscow \u2026 hopes for a speedy return of internal political processes to constitutional norms in a country friendly to us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source:- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/5\/world-reacts-to-bangladesh-pm-sheikh-hasinas-removal-from-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/5\/world-reacts-to-bangladesh-pm-sheikh-hasinas-removal-from-power<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country after weeks of deadly anti-government protests.
