Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0has threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz as \u201ca territory of the United States\u201d as his administration struggles to conclude the war with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a speech at a police academy on Long Island, New York, on Friday, the US president said he would \u201cpretty soon\u201d designate the waterway \u2013 a crucial chokepoint for global trade, through which about a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil supplies typically pass \u2013 a US territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comment came as peace talks with Iran<\/a> remain at an impasse following failed negotiations, with Tehran refusing to reopen the strait, which has been all but closed since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost six months into the war, there is little indication that negotiations will soon yield peace, as Iranian officials continue to defy Trump\u2019s demands. The US has been blockading Iranian shipping and \u2060ports in recent months in an effort to pile economic pressure on Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I\u2019ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,\u201d Trump said on Friday. \u201cEssentially, that\u2019s what it is. We have the blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seriousness of Trump\u2019s remark, and whether it signaled a new policy \u200bposition for his administration, was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding on X, formerly Twitter, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran\u2019s deputy foreign minister, said Tehran would not \u2060be intimidated by threats, \u200bor \u200ca show \u200cof force, by \u200cthe US \u2013 and added that the strait of Hormuz \u200bwould only \u200bbe opened, \u200bor \u200cclosed, under Iran\u2019s \u200bauthority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview published on Saturday, Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said that Iran had not \u2060decided to resume talks \u2060with the US, \u200band messages being exchanged via \u2060Qatar and Pakistan did not amount \u2060to negotiations, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Araqchi told Iranian news outlet Shahrara News that separate talks \u200cwith Oman were focused on defining \u200ba sea route through the Strait of Hormuz, while \u2060the US \u200bwould \u200bhave to meet \u200bconditions for shipping \u200bto \u200cresume \u200bthrough \u200bthe waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Trump claimed that the US had \u201ctotal control\u201d over the strait and said \u201cI think we will keep it\u201d on Truth Social, despite the waterway being an internationally navigable strait bordered by Iran and Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel prices have risen sharply<\/a> since the start of the war, forcing working Americans to pay significantly more at the pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, on Friday, Trump said that Americans who have had to \u201cpay a tiny little bit more for your gasoline\u201d should remember that they are \u201cdoing it so that a very evil country cannot have a \u2013 really, it\u2019s the No 1 state sponsor of terror in the world \u2013 we don\u2019t want them to have a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you have to pay a little bit more, you\u2019re at $4, it\u2019s OK, I mean, it\u2019s not. I\u2019ll never apologize. I did the right thing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past six months, the Trump administration has repeatedly claimed victory<\/a> in the war, saying Iran\u2019s regime has been pleading for a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran has remained steadfast in its demands, saying<\/a> as recently as last Saturday that it will not reopen the strait of Hormuz unless the US \u201ccorrects its behavior\u201d, \u201ccompletely compensate[s]\u201d Iran for war damage, lifts sanctions and \u201cunconditionally\u201d releases frozen assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
