<\/a>Israel will allow a multinational security force to enter Gaza as proposed under US President Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0ceasefire plan<\/a>\u00a0for the enclave, an Israeli official said on Sunday, a day before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heads to Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu\u2019s security cabinet on Sunday approved the legal framework that would allow the force\u2019s entry to Gaza, the official said. Netanyahu is scheduled to depart for Washington on Monday and is expected to meet Trump on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official said that the mission, called the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), will include 200 members from \u201cfriendly countries such as Uganda and Morocco\u201d deploying in areas that are not under Israeli control. Each contingent requires individual Israeli approval to enter Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was unclear when the forces would deploy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of Gaza remains in ruins<\/a> from two years<\/a> \u200bof relentless Israeli bombing triggered by the Hamas-led attacks<\/a> on Israel on Oct 7, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a ceasefire deal<\/a> was struck in October, Trump set \u200bout a 20-point peace plan<\/a> for Gaza that provided for a surge in humanitarian aid, civilian administration by Palestinian \u2060technocrats, Hamas laying down its arms and Israeli forces withdrawing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the plan has stalled and the group of technocrats<\/a> \u2014 known as the \u200bNational Committee for the Administration of Gaza \u2014 has remained outside Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel effectively controls an estimated 64 per cent \u200bof Gaza, while nearly all of its \u20602 \u200bmillion people live on a sliver \u200bof land on the coast, mainly in makeshift tents or damaged buildings and facing \u200bdire conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamas<\/a> has so far refused to disarm, and Israel has said it will expand its area of control in Gaza to 70pc of the enclave, where it has continued almost daily military strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s plan included a Board of Peace as an overarching international authority responsible for implementing the peace framework. It would oversee the security force, among other functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board is planning a pilot humanitarian zone<\/a> for Gazans as a way to kickstart \u200bthe US president\u2019s stalled plan, a board official said this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nickolay Mladenov, Trump\u2019s Special Envoy for Peace in Gaza, welcomed the Israeli decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a critical part of the agreed framework for stabilising Gaza, supporting demilitarisation, and enabling the transition to effective Palestinian transitional administration under the NCAG,\u201d he said on X, referring to the Palestinian civilian administration body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
