Muslim Masters have trained continuously and arduously, venturing on the never-ending journey towards physical and spiritual perfection, serving as a lifelong inspiration to their Muslim communities and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_187b2d4e819748fd8dc0fc764296c98f~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_456,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_187b2d4e819748fd8dc0fc764296c98f~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The early trade that led to a great relationship between Arab Muslims and the Chinese played a pivotal role in the spread of Islam in the far east, as well as cementing the Muslim-Chinese identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_2018e51b10b341cb83bc7713521f03ac~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_720,h_540,al_c,lg_1,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_2018e51b10b341cb83bc7713521f03ac~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Islam in China is well documented, with the Hui people acting as the largest Muslim minority within the country. From approximately 19 years after the death of Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa, a relationship between China and Arabia was already in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_28bd7a60b5844a209ebaa84f75202006~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_750,h_499,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_28bd7a60b5844a209ebaa84f75202006~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the third Khalifah (Caliph), Uthman (RA), who initiated the first conscious efforts to spread Islam in the region, with subsequent trade missions also contributing to the spread of Islam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_ace9089cadc04d1ab396d3766f547145~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_616,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_ace9089cadc04d1ab396d3766f547145~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hui Muslims came from this lineage, a unification of Arabia &amp; China to form this unique position of authentic Chinese culture, infused with the Islamic tradition, the likes of which can still be seen to this day in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_d6c3da4d35aa4dd292d4d67ba4524ab6~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_486,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_d6c3da4d35aa4dd292d4d67ba4524ab6~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only did martial arts combine with practical aspects of defence for long seafaring trade missions, but it was also a spiritual tool of many Muslim masters. The need for self-control and restraint is reflected in both martial arts and traditional Islamic teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_936594838348495794f1073d3d92c3f7~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_775,h_1200,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_936594838348495794f1073d3d92c3f7~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muslim Masters have succeeded in harmonizing the internal &amp; external form of Kung fu, successfully remaining close to their original faith, applying tremendous \u201cijtihad\u201d (effort) in producing ultimately effective &amp; indigenous martial arts of their own, based on their religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_43993d187a6a48d39f6068ad8b14eb32~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_830,h_556,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_43993d187a6a48d39f6068ad8b14eb32~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of Islamic self-control was used by martial arts masters in the physical realm as well. With practitioners putting emphasis on both spiritual and physical aspects of training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_c4c65a149c7b4e22a66af69b82f65e78~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_613,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_c4c65a149c7b4e22a66af69b82f65e78~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indigenous Muslim martial arts were often epitomized with distinctive Islamic (Arabic) names and their technical effectiveness peaked within Kung Fu circles in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_72296dd40de842db845e5f9a77dc56d2~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_540,h_741,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_72296dd40de842db845e5f9a77dc56d2~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various art forms, such as Silat and Wushu, have been perfected by Muslims of the last few hundred years, with many original martial arts being either created or adapted by Muslims as well, such as Zhaquan and Piguquan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_685c0e559dcc4d7d956da645b2f2b78a~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_616,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_685c0e559dcc4d7d956da645b2f2b78a~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These original developments were tools that were often created by army officials or to safeguard Muslims in China, being passed down in secret through generations across Muslim communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_a354d307d2724742a9f97116f4fa5c3c~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_616,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_a354d307d2724742a9f97116f4fa5c3c~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the history of martial arts and Islam, there are many names to consider. Particularly, masters such as Wang Zi Ping (1881 &#8211; 1973) &amp; Chang Tung Sheng (1908 &#8211; 1986) were trained in their discipline, while retaining their faith &amp; using it as a means to come closer to Allah &amp; Islam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_4049b5562c21402cb4c2b211849c3742~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_600,h_748,al_c,lg_1,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_4049b5562c21402cb4c2b211849c3742~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Wang Zi-Ping (1881\u20131973) was a Chinese Muslim practitioner of Chinese Martial Arts &amp; traditional medicine. He served as the leader of the Shaolin Kung Fu division of the Martial Arts Institute in 1928 &amp; was also the vice chairman of the Chinese Wushu Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_dfd09a42b0f84f3db479de4139b40266~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_863,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_dfd09a42b0f84f3db479de4139b40266~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Wang Zi Ping, acknowledged as a master of Wushu, was also a learned man in relation to Islam. He was known to lift heavy stones while reciting the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_106d443ccef74b25b2dbafdd8aeec76d~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_750,h_1010,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_106d443ccef74b25b2dbafdd8aeec76d~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A renowned story tells of his opposition to German forces who tried to take the doors of the Qinzhou masjid, inscribed with the history of the Muslims in China. Master Wang would not let them be taken, &amp; challenged the soldiers to a weight-lifting competition &amp; subsequently won!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_17b104335d40405db466bf6843a08701~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_263,h_350,al_c,lg_1,q_80,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_17b104335d40405db466bf6843a08701~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A master of various other disciplines, Wang Zi Ping was an inspiration to people, Muslim &amp; non-Muslim alike. His mastery of martial arts allowed him to gain victory over various foreign opponents, leading to a following of students &amp; spreading Islam amongst Chinese people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_20802b22f5aa4f83bdf28da315b6d128~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_573,h_766,al_c,lg_1,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_20802b22f5aa4f83bdf28da315b6d128~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chang Tung-Sheng (1908-1986) was a Hui martial artist. He was one of the best-known Chinese wrestling (also known as Shuai jiao) practitioners &amp; teachers. Chang was a devout and practicing Muslim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_45a064c2bacb4966a8a3cbf089b880f6~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_847,h_1129,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_45a064c2bacb4966a8a3cbf089b880f6~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nickname \u201cFlying Butterfly\u201d was given to him early in his career for his ability to circle &amp; ensnare his opponents. Grandmaster Ch\u2019ang\u2019s teacher was the famous Chang Fang-yen, an expert in Pao-ting Shuai-chiao \u2013 the fastest &amp; most powerful of the 3 main branches of the art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_ccfcf25df16446809750293478800fbb~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_720,h_360,al_c,lg_1,q_80,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_ccfcf25df16446809750293478800fbb~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one of his most famous matches, Chang challenged the Mongolian wrestling champion, Hukli, who was supposedly 7 ft tall &amp; weighed nearly 400 pounds. Chang was victorious, throwing down Hukli repeatedly, despite the size difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7335d9_25c68726f431400f9b7e8bf4059df7d3~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_672,h_634,al_c,q_85,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7335d9_25c68726f431400f9b7e8bf4059df7d3~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, martial arts &amp; the Islamic tradition share a unique bond and history in which both contain means to achieve a greater purpose, embedding the uniqueness of Chinese culture, with the absoluteness of Islam.
