The administration of United States President Donald Trump has escalated its\u00a0pressure campaign<\/a>\u00a0against the International Criminal Court (ICC), with the US State Department vowing \u201ca whole-of-government response to systematically disable\u201d the tribunal\u2019s ability to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Department \u201ccampaign\u201d was announced in a news release on Monday, accompanied by a video statement from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes as the Trump administration has already imposed sanctions on ICC officials<\/a> and rights groups<\/a> that have provided evidence to the court, amid wider threats to penalise any entities that aid in investigations into the US or its allies, particularly Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his video statement, Rubio upped the rhetorical temperature, accusing the court of \u201cwaging a war against our country, not with bullets or missiles, but with statutes, compacts, and the force of so-called international law\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, it threatens every aspect of our political and legal system,\u201d he said. \u201cIf they believe they can deprive us of our sovereignty, we will teach them the full meaning of American resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement included a few concrete steps, but listed several \u201cactions under consideration\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They included an appeal to countries that partner with the US military and law enforcement to \u201creject the ICC\u2019s purported authority to prosecute American officials and servicemen\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also listed \u201cincreased scrutiny of nations that refuse to reject the ICC\u2019s false authority while relying on US assistance\u201d, as well as \u201cincreased sanctions\u201d and travel bans for ICC personnel and affiliated organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
