<\/a>Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez denounced the \u201cruthless\u201d US embargo against the communist island during a UN General Assembly debate on Tuesday that occurred despite diplomatic pressure by Washington to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe government of the United States is carrying out <\/a>against Cuba a multi-dimensional, non-conventional warfare that has already lasted for almost seven decades now and has become ever more cruel and more ruthless during the last seven months,\u201d Rodriguez told the body, slamming the blockade\u2019s \u201ccollective punishment\u201d of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPaying attention to this ruthless crime is also a responsibility of the United Nations,\u201d he added.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The damage wrought by the embargo from March 2025 through February 2026 amounts to a record $8 billion, a seven per cent increase over the same period one year earlier, he said, noting the figures do not include the \u201cextreme impact\u201d of the\u00a0fuel blockade<\/a>\u00a0the US imposed on Cuba in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most regional blocs, including countries in Africa and the Caribbean, expressed their support for Cuba on Tuesday and condemned the US blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year since 1992, the General Assembly has adopted by a large majority a non-binding resolution calling for the lifting of the blockade imposed on Cuba by the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support weakened slightly last October, when 165 member states voted <\/a>in favor and seven against, with a dozen abstentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday\u2019s vote on whether to hold the debate signaled potential further erosion, with 136 in favor, nine against, and 30 abstentions \u2014 including traditional supporters Germany and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no American blockade,\u201d US Ambassador Mike Waltz insisted from the podium. \u201cThe only embargo in Cuba is the guillotine the regime keeps over the heads of its people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to recent diplomatic talks <\/a>between Havana and Washington, Rodriguez stressed that \u201cthere has not been any progress\u201d and would likely be none as long as US officials \u201ctreat Cuba as a vanquished or conquered adversary, as a colonial possession.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some speakers, while deploring US policy toward Cuba, pointed to Havana\u2019s responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe dire situation of the Cuban people is not only due to the embargo,\u201d said the European Union\u2019s ambassador to the UN, Stavros Lambrinidis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The envoy highlighted the need for authorities to make \u201cmeaningful political and economic reforms\u201d in Cuba, including respect for human rights, while he condemned Havana\u2019s alignment with Moscow in Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Pakistan voices support for Cuba<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Pakistan\u2019s Permanent Representative to the UN Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, called for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial embargo on Cuba, saying \u201clifting the restrictions would help ease the humanitarian situation, enable the Cuban people to realise their right to development and prosperity, and reaffirm the principles of multilateralism and international cooperation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the debate, he expressed concern over the impact of the embargo on Cuba and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that \u201cinternational cooperation and multilateral engagement, underpinned by sovereign equality and mutual respect, remain the cornerstone of the international order\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further noted that \u201cunilateral economic measures, particularly when applied selectively against developing countries, run counter to these principles\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Asim reiterated Pakistan\u2019s commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, particularly respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of all States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He underscored the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter, and encouraged continued dialogue and diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the current blockade, Cuba is experiencing mounting anguish over power cuts<\/a> imposed across the country in an increasingly desperate attempt to conserve fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food, drinking water and medicine are in increasingly short supply, and the United Nations has warned of a humanitarian emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
