{"id":34470,"date":"2026-07-08T19:35:56","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T19:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=34470"},"modified":"2026-07-08T19:36:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T19:36:00","slug":"un-chief-says-world-must-not-let-ai-vibe-code-humanitys-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=34470","title":{"rendered":"UN chief says world must not let AI &#8216;vibe-code&#8217; humanity&#8217;s future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"whatsapp:\/\/send?text=UN%20chief%20says%20world%20must%20not%20let%20AI%20%27vibe-code%27%20humanity%27s%20future%20%0A%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2Fnews%2F2013362%3Futm_source%3Dwhatsapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=dawn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>The United Nations chief called on Monday for a global governance system to shape artificial intelligence for the good of humanity, warning against allowing the technology itself to \u201cvibe-code\u201d our future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With AI advancing at \u201crunaway speed\u201d, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres cautioned that \u201can experiment is being run on our own societies, without a plan and without consent\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not sustainable,\u201d he said, speaking before a first Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, which brings together governments, tech companies, academia and civil society.<a href=\"https:\/\/globalsun.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAI is already transforming our world,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe question is whether we will shape this transformation together, or let it shape us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guterres warned that AI systems were \u201cno longer tools awaiting instruction\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are writing code, acting online and making choices with less and less human oversight,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur institutions were built to govern machines that follow commands. They are not ready for machines that decide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guterres voiced concern about how AI was further obscuring what is true and false, and highlighted a growing tendency to leave important tasks to technology and blindly trust its results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So-called \u201cvibe-coding\u201d, or using AI to tell a machine what you want instead of coding it yourself, \u201ccan do wonders\u201d, he acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut we cannot vibe-code the truth. We cannot vibe-code the future of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2013362#major-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Major risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another risk flagged by Guterres was the concentration of power in a handful of AI companies and in a handful of countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most countries \u201chave had no say in decisions that will shape their futures\u201d, he warned. In the face of such challenges, he said countries faced a stark choice, \u201cbetween governing by design and drifting by default\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN chief highlighted the potential of AI technologies for everything from accelerating development to improving healthcare and providing broader access to education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he insisted that developments needed to be guided by several key priorities, including safety and respect for human rights, to ensure that people everywhere reap the benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for \u201ccommon methods to evaluate and verify risks\u201d and jointly agreed standards, particularly for ensuring the safety of children accessing AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not let medicine reach a child until it is proven safe. We test every toy,\u201d Guterres pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYet AI has reached our children \u2014 their learning, their friendships, their most private questions \u2014 before anyone asked what it would do to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guterres called for an AI Child Safety Pledge, requiring companies to prove that any system accessible to children is safe and has zero tolerance for sexual abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The systems must also connect any child showing signs of distress to real human support, he said. \u201cNo child should be a guinea pig for unregulated AI,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2013362#killer-robots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>\u2018Killer robots\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boosting AI capacity and access in developing countries was also key, he said, to ensure that the existing deep digital divide does not \u201charden into an AI divide\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guterres said he would urge the UN General Assembly to create a Global Fund for AI, \u201cto build skills, data and affordable computing power everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another priority was reducing AI\u2019s climate impact, he said, reiterating his call for companies to reveal their growing environmental footprint and to commit to powering every data centre with renewable energy by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN chief, meanwhile, said that his biggest concern revolved around AI in military settings, and in particular, so-called lethal autonomous weapon systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us call them what they are: Killer robots,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMachines selecting and engaging their target and taking a life \u2014 without human control and judgement\u201d. \u201cThat is morally repugnant\u2026 And it must be banned by international law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guterres stressed the urgency of creating sufficient guardrails to steer AI in a positive direction. \u201cWe may be the last generation able to set the terms on which humanity and machines coexist,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe door is still open.
