Parts of the country have recently seen temperatures rise above 35°C, with rainfall and extreme heat accelerating snowmelt in some areas and increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

The Pakistani climate change ministry said the fresh funding, effective from July 1, will finance four key projects focusing on ecological restoration, youth-oriented green skills, urban resilience, and strengthening institutional capacity to support the country’s climate action agenda.

“These investments are aimed at protecting people, restoring ecosystems and ensuring that the country is better prepared to confront emerging threats posed by glacial retreat, GLOFs, water stress, heat extremes, forest fires and environmental degradation,” said Saleem Sheikh, who speaks for the ministry.

The largest share of the budget allocation, amounting to Rs2.3 billion ($8.2 million), has been set aside for the “Up-scaling of Green Pakistan Program” to expand forest cover, conserve biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration, and restore degraded ecosystems, according to the ministry.

Rs51.6 million ($185,500) has been allocated for the “Green Skills for Sustainable Development” initiative to equip young people with skills for a low-carbon economy and to promote green entrepreneurship. Rs50 million ($179,500) has been earmarked to develop a national urban strategy and guidelines to reduce the impacts of urban flooding, droughts, and other climate-related disasters.

The ministry said an additional Rs40.6 million ($146,000) has been allocated to strengthen its technical capacity in areas, including climate finance, marine biodiversity, water and sanitation, and hazardous waste management.

The PSDP package aims to strengthen Pakistan’s preparedness against rising risks from glacial melt, water scarcity, deforestation, heatwaves, forest fires, and land degradation.

Pakistan has repeatedly urged developed nations to support climate-vulnerable countries through stronger international climate finance and loss and damage mechanisms. Despite contributing only around one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, the country continues to face recurring floods and other climate-related disasters.

At least 1,000 people were killed last year when intense monsoon rains, combined with excess water released from Indian dams, triggered flash floods across Pakistan.

Reference Link:- https://www.arabnews.com/node/2647143/pakistan

Volunteers rescue flood-affected villagers in Jalalpur Pirwala of the Multan district in Punjab province on September 9, 2025, after the Chenab river overflowed following heavy monsoon rains.
