Israeli settlers could face further sanctions in the coming days in protest at the escalation of illegal settlements in the West Bank and a surge in \u200bviolence by settlers against Palestinians, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on \u200cSunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers and organisations that support them late last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Public Senat television and RTL radio, Barrot did not name the European countries he said could \u200bimpose further measures. But in a reference to the previous EU sanctions<\/a>, he \u200bsaid: “We could go further, and in the coming days, further sanctions could \u2060be imposed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks follow escalating violence<\/a> by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank and \u200bunderscore anger in many Western countries toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government, which has \u200bexpanded settlements. Diplomats say that expansion is aimed at undermining prospects for a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reuters reported on Saturday, citing European diplomats, that France is working with several countries to step up pressure on Israel<\/a> by \u200bpressing ahead with coordinated national sanctions targeting individuals linked to violence<\/a> in the West Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I \u200bam extremely concerned about the escalation of illegal settlement activity in the West Bank and the \u200csurge \u2060in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians,” Barrot said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is why I have pushed for sanctions to be imposed not only on those responsible for this violence, but also on the entities, companies and organisations in Israel that are providing these extremist settlers \u200bwith the means to \u200bdrive Palestinians from \u2060their land, burn their crops and destroy their public buildings,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the previous measures were “a way of calling on the \u200bIsraeli government to face up to its responsibilities regarding this \u200bviolence, which, \u2060in my view, also undermines the authority of the state to some extent.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 22, seven major Western nations called on Israel to halt the expansion of settlements in the \u2060West Bank \u200band curb growing settler violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Over the past few \u200bmonths, the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated significantly,” Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, and New \u200bZealand said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
