Photo: X\/ File<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday congratulated Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027\u20132028 term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a post on X, Dar extended his best wishes to the newly elected members, writing: \u201cCongratulations to Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the UNSC for the 2027\u20132028 term.\u201d \u201cWe wish them every success in fulfilling this important responsibility,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaffirming Pakistan\u2019s diplomatic priorities during its current tenure on the Council, Dar said that Pakistan, which will remain a member of the Security Council through 2026, is committed to promoting peace, security, dialogue and multilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also expressed optimism about future collaboration with the incoming members, saying Pakistan looks forward to working closely with them to advance shared goals and contribute towards \u201ca more peaceful, secure and equitable world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Also Read:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2611390\/our-position-on-the-abraham-accords-is-clear-fo-says-reiterates-no-policy-shift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Our position on the Abraham Accords is clear,&#8217; FO reiterates no policy shift<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad \u200band Tobago, and Zimbabwe to the 15-member UN Security Council for \u200ctwo-year terms starting on January 1, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Security Council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions \u200bsuch as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. It has \u200bfive permanent veto-wielding members: Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u200cremaining \u206010 members are elected, with five new members joining every year. This year, one comes from the Africa Group, one from the Latin American and Caribbean Group, one from the Asia-Pacific Group, and two \u200bfrom the Western \u200bEuropean and Others \u2060Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bBahrain, Colombia, \u2060Democratic Republic of Congo, Latvia, and Liberia will continue to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council until the end of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June 2024, Pakistan was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2470129\/pakistan-secures-non-permanent-seat-on-un-security-council-with-overwhelming-majority\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elected<\/a>\u00a0as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, securing a massive majority.
