The republic will serve on one of the UN’s principal bodies during the 2027–2028 term.

The vote took place on June 3 during a session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Kyrgyzstan received the support of 142 member states, while the Philippines, which competed for the same seat, secured 49 votes.

The election proved challenging, with the winner determined only after four rounds of voting. In the initial rounds, neither Kyrgyzstan nor the Philippines managed to obtain the required two-thirds majority of the General Assembly.

Kyrgyzstan’s term on the Security Council will begin on January 1, 2027, and conclude on December 31, 2028. The republic will take the seat currently held by Pakistan.

Following the announcement of the results, President Sadyr Japarov congratulated the people of Kyrgyzstan on the historic achievement.

«We will take part in writing a new page in the history of the United Nations. In May, President Sadyr Japarov appealed to the leaders of UN member states to support Kyrgyzstan’s candidacy. He emphasised that the republic had never before served on the Security Council and called for broader representation of small, developing, and landlocked countries in key international institutions.

All Central Asian countries had previously expressed support for Kyrgyzstan’s candidacy. A joint statement of support was circulated through the permanent missions of the region’s states to the United Nations at the end of 2025.

Bishkek stated that, if elected, it would prioritise preventive diplomacy, peaceful conflict resolution, confidence-building measures between states, climate security issues, and the protection of the most vulnerable groups. The Kyrgyz side also reaffirmed its commitment to international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

On the eve of the vote, Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev presented Kyrgyzstan’s Security Council program in New York. He stated that the republic was prepared to serve as a platform for dialogue and promote peaceful mechanisms for resolving disputes.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states. Five are permanent members with veto power: China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The remaining ten members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms.

Alongside Kyrgyzstan, Austria, Portugal, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago were also elected to the Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
