MUMBAI, May 29 (Reuters) – India’s foreign exchange reserves (INFXR=ECI), opens new tab<\/a> fell to a more than one-year low of $681.4 \u200bbillion in the week ended May 22, from $688.89 billion \u200ca week earlier, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $7.5 billion decline was largely due to a $4.5 \u200bbillion fall in the value of the \u200bcentral bank’s gold holdings, week-on-week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The value of \u2060the RBI’s foreign currency assets also shrunk by \u200bnearly $3 billion to $543 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changes in foreign currency assets, expressed \u200bin dollar terms, include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of other currencies in the reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RBI has been selling \u200bdollars to defend the beleaguered rupee, which has \u200bdeclined 4% since the U.S.-Iran war began, as surging energy \u200cprices \u2060sparked capital outflows and clouded India’s macroeconomic outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the week to which the data pertains, the rupee <INR=IN> slid to a record low of 96.96 per dollar \u200bbefore being shored \u200bup by \u2060firm RBI intervention over multiple trading sessions, including likely on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It ended the \u200bsession at 95 per dollar, up \u200b0.7% \u2060week-on-week. Foreign exchange reserves include India’s Reserve Tranche position in the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
