{"id":32364,"date":"2026-05-26T05:56:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T05:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=32364"},"modified":"2026-05-26T05:56:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T05:56:20","slug":"pakistan-is-witnessing-a-bottom-up-solar-revolution-says-a-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=32364","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan is witnessing a bottom-up solar revolution, says a report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=brecorder.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><strong>The role of renewables in Pakistan\u2019s fuel mix has shifted from negligible to substantial over just a few years, but the country still has not signaled a commitment to the rapid energy transition away from coal that is already under way, a recent report has said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Boom and Bust 2026, Global Energy Monitor\u2019s (GEM) definitive report on the global coal fleet, now in its eleventh year, Pakistan is seeing a \u201cbottom-up\u201d solar revolution that is destabilising the national grid\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 2025, decentralised solar installations boomed in Pakistan, with an estimated 25% of total electricity consumption now coming from solar, the vast majority of which is off-grid,\u201d a press release related to the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYet even as solar soars, Pakistan continues to cling to its coal fleet: none of its operating coal plants have a planned retirement date, nor does the country formally recognise the need for coal retirement through its Nationally Determined Contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, the statement said, there is a continued push for indigenous coal\u2019s role as a cornerstone of energy security for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor example, independent power producers reliant on coal are seeking extended long-term guarantees that would entrench coal power into the system over the next decade, further crowding out space for lower-cost alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Also read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brecorder.com\/news\/40397164\/pakistans-solar-rush-unlocked-17-19bn-in-private-investment-in-8-years-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pakistan\u2019s solar rush unlocked $17-19bn in private investment in 8 years: study<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucy Hummer, Senior Researcher for Global Energy Monitor\u2019s Global Coal Plant Tracker, said, \u201cThe challenge has shifted from \u2018keeping the lights on\u2019 to \u2018paying for what isn\u2019t used.\u2019 Pakistan is now at the front lines of a global struggle to exit uneconomical coal agreements that the power systems have already begun to outgrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaheera Tahir, Head of the Energy Transition Department at the Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development (PRIED), said, \u201cIn the wake of war in Iran, Pakistan faces a serious dilemma: either keep the momentum going for distributed solar power or convert coal power plants running on imported fossil fuels to indigenous coal in order to address the war-induced supply constraints\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe bad thing is that the government is taking the second route, replacing foreign fossil fuels with local ones, but the good thing is that the people of Pakistan are still installing distributed solar at a rapid pace even when the government has already imposed a 10% tax on the sale of solar panels and created a number of tariff and non-tariff barriers to discourage grid-connected solarisation,\u201d Tahir said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reference Link:- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brecorder.com\/news\/40422524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.brecorder.com\/news\/40422524<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The role of renewables in Pakistan\u2019s fuel mix has shifted from negligible to substantial over just a few years, but the country still has not signaled a commitment to the rapid energy transition away from coal that is already under way, a recent report has said.
