{"id":31805,"date":"2026-05-04T04:50:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T04:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=31805"},"modified":"2026-05-04T04:50:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T04:50:34","slug":"spain-demands-release-of-gaza-flotilla-activists-held-illegally-by-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=31805","title":{"rendered":"Spain demands release of Gaza flotilla activists held illegally by Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Israeli court extends detention of two men who were among 175 people intercepted near Crete on Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" src=\"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-11-1024x819.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-11-1024x819.png 1024w, https:\/\/gsrra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-11-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/gsrra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-11-768x614.png 768w, https:\/\/gsrra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-11-1536x1228.png 1536w, https:\/\/gsrra.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-11-2048x1637.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain demands the release of Gaza flotilla activists held illegally by Israel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain\u2019s foreign ministry has demanded the immediate release of a Spanish national it said was being \u201cheld illegally\u201d by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a>&nbsp;after the interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla, hours after an Israeli court moved to extend his detention by two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saif Abu Keshek, who lives in Barcelona, and Thiago \u00c1vila, from Brazil, appeared in court in Ashkelon on Sunday, days after Israeli forces&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/30\/israel-intercepts-detains-crews-gaza-aid-flotillas-crete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intercepted at least 22 boats<\/a>&nbsp;from a flotilla that was attempting to break Israel\u2019s maritime blockade of the devastated Palestinian territory to deliver aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interception took place in international waters off&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greece<\/a>. Israel later said it had removed 175 activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was made up of about 58 vessels carrying crew members from 70 countries. Two members of the flotilla, Abu Keshek and \u00c1vila, were later taken to Israel for questioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, the rights group representing the pair said the court had ruled to extend their detention and that no formal charges had been filed against them. \u201cThe court extended their detention by two days,\u201d Miriam Azem, the international advocacy coordinator at Adalah, told Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A source from Spain\u2019s foreign ministry told the Guardian on Sunday that the Spanish consul in Tel Aviv had attended Abu Keshek\u2019s court hearing, adding that he was being \u201cheld illegally\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His next hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, the source said, adding: \u201cThe Spanish government demands his immediate release.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, Adalah said its lawyers had met the two detained activists at Shikma prison in Ashkelon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" vessels were seized, saying he had been \u201cdragged face-down across the floor and beaten so severely that he passed out twice\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since arriving in Israel, \u00c1vila said he had been \u201ckept in isolation and blindfolded\u201d, according to Adalah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"369a94f2-5d8c-4d37-914e-22688013ae49\"><a class=\"dcr-1m887w9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/30\/israel-intercepts-detains-crews-gaza-aid-flotillas-crete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" forced to lie face down on the floor from the moment of his seizure\u201d until reaching Israel, the group said. \u201cBoth activists are continuing their hunger strike in protest of their unlawful detention and ill-treatment,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel\u2019s foreign ministry has accused the two activists of being affiliated with an organisation that is subject to US Treasury sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington accuses<\/a>&nbsp;the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad (PCPA) of \u201cclandestinely\u201d acting on behalf of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel\u2019s foreign ministry accused Abu Keshek of being a leading PCPA member and alleged that \u00c1vila was also linked to the organisation and \u201csuspected of illegal activity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"7853d65c-08ec-488d-be68-728c5c7d755a\"><img href=\"https:\/\/www.exteriores.gob.es\/es\/Comunicacion\/Comunicados\/Paginas\/2026_COMUNICADOS\/Comunicado-Espana-Brasil-sobre-secuestro-en-aguas-internacionales.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued a joint statement<\/a>&nbsp;condemning what they described as the \u201cabduction of two of their citizens in international waters by the government of Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spanish and Brazilian governments demanded the immediate return of their citizens, adding: \u201cThis flagrantly illegal action by the Israeli authorities outside their jurisdiction constitutes a violation of international law, which could be brought before international courts, and may constitute a crime under our respective national laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain and Israel have long been at diplomatic odds, particularly as the Spanish prime minister, Pedro S\u00e1nchez,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/08\/spanish-pm-pedro-sanchez-israel-exterminating-defenceless-people-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emerges as one<\/a>&nbsp;of Europe\u2019s most vocal critics of Israel\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at a political rally on Saturday, S\u00e1nchez condemned the detention of Abu Keshek and \u00c1vila. \u201cWe have seen that the Israeli authorities under [Benjamin] Netanyahu\u2019s government have kidnapped several citizens who were on the flotilla heading to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/palestinian-territories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestine<\/a>\u00a0to deliver humanitarian aid and to continue reminding the world that people are suffering in Gaza, in the West Bank, and throughout Palestine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S\u00e1nchez added: \u201cNow that Netanyahu has done this \u2013 kidnapping foreign citizens, one of them Spanish \u2013 and taken him to Israel, I have several things to say to Prime Minister Netanyahu. The first is that Spain will always protect its citizens. The second is that we will always defend international law, and this is a new violation of international law. The Israeli military declined to comment when asked about the accusations by AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Sumud Flotilla\u2019s previous attempt to reach Gaza in the summer and autumn of 2025 drew global attention after Israeli forces intercepted the boats off the coasts of Egypt and Palestinian territory.
