China has issued a stark warning to the US regarding the military’s reliance on artificial intelligence, suggesting it could lead to a dystopian future reminiscent of ‘The Terminator’. The Pentagon’s recent actions raise ethical concerns about AI in warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China warned the United States on Wednesday that the excessive use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its military could plunge the world into a\u00a0Terminator-like dystopian future<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration has sought the unconditional use of AI startups in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pentagon has confirmed Elon Musk\u2019s Grok system is cleared for use in a classified setting and blacklisted Anthropic after it refused to allow its Claude AI model to be used for mass surveillance and autonomous lethal warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSuch choices as the unrestricted application of AI by the military, using AI as a tool to violate the sovereignty of other nations, allowing AI to excessively affect war decisions, and giving algorithms the power to determine life and death, not only erode ethical restraints and accountability in wars but also risk technological runaway,\u201d a spokesman for China\u2019s defence ministry, Jiang Bin, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA dystopia depicted in the American film The Terminator could one day come true,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Terminator, released in 1984 and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, depicts an apocalyptic future in which AI-controlled robots fight humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pentagon\u2019s row with Anthropic erupted days before the US military strike on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claude is the Pentagon\u2019s most widely deployed frontier AI model and the only such model currently operating on the Defence Department\u2019s classified systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthropic infuriated Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth by insisting its technology should not be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump subsequently ordered every federal agency to cease all use of Anthropic\u2019s technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, Hegseth designated Anthropic a \u201cSupply-Chain Risk to National Security\u201d and ordered that no military contractor, supplier, or partner \u201cmay conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic\u201d, while allowing a six-month transition period for the Pentagon itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
