Iran is Hezbollah\u2019s main benefactor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Israel has carried out a fierce air campaign on Lebanon, killing nearly 500 people, including 83 children, and forcing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/3\/2\/israel-intensifies-war-on-lebanon-after-hezbollah-attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">half a million<\/a>\u00a0people from their homes. Such a solution is also seen as highly tied to the US and Israel\u2019s war on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/INTERACTIVE_LEBANON_CEASEFIRE_MAP_INTERACTIVE-Israel-Hezbollah-ceasefire-agreement-01-1738081308.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C962&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE_LEBANON_CEASEFIRE_MAP_INTERACTIVE - Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement-01-1738081308\" class=\"wp-image-3472567\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there is an Israeli invasion, the Army cannot arrest someone opposing the Israelis on their own land,\u201d Hassan Jouni, a retired brigadier general with the LAF, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"israeli-soldiers-on-lebanese-land\">Israeli soldiers on Lebanese land<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hezbollah\u2019s decision to enter the fighting reportedly took much of the Lebanese political establishment by surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government, which in August 2025&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/6\/hezbollah-to-treat-lebanons-disarmament-decision-as-if-it-does-not-exist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved a plan<\/a>&nbsp;to have the LAF disarm Hezbollah, immediately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/2\/lebanese-pm-nawaf-salam-announces-ban-on-hezbollah-military-activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared the group\u2019s military activities \u201cillegal\u201d<\/a>, while Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called Hezbollah\u2019s move a \u201cstrategic mistake\u201d, in an interview with Lebanese newspaper L\u2019Orient-Le Jour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reuters news agency reported that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a longtime steadfast ally of Hezbollah, was surprised by the move after he had received \u201cassurances\u201d from Hezbollah that it would not retaliate against Israel for its attacks on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/c8fbe265-7cae-4c5c-ab60-dd6123604ffe\/5493a2b6-76c9-4b07-bbd2-8aef49323931\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Israel strikes Hezbollah financial institutions in Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One week into the resumption of fighting, however, the conflict shows no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Lebanese military source told Al Jazeera that Israeli ground troops are present in numerous points, mostly in unpopulated land a few kilometres (miles) into Lebanese territory. Data collected by conflict monitor ACLED showed the Israeli forces had also engaged in clashes with Hezbollah fighters in villages in the central and eastern sectors of southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple analysts told Al Jazeera the presence of the Israeli army in southern Lebanon would make the army\u2019s job of disarming Hezbollah impossible, foremost in that any occupation would lead to a renewed form of resistance \u2013 be it from Hezbollah or another group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one can implement the government\u2019s decision [to enforce the illegality of Hezbollah\u2019s military actions],\u201d Qassem Kassir, a Lebanese analyst close to Hezbollah. \u201cAnd today there is an Israeli occupation. Everyone will become part of the resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/e48c241a-98b0-484a-bca0-0ea69abedb83\/c8c597cf-96d7-47fa-8b7d-2edd2dcff77b\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Israel media \u2018blackout\u2019 on Iran, Hezbollah attacks as military censor targets reporters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, Hezbollah was considered Lebanon\u2019s most capable fighting force. Formed in the early 1980s with considerable support from Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IGRC), it grew to become a regional actor, with members deployed in countries such as Syria and Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LAF, meanwhile, has faced severe economic struggles that have led to defections and soldiers working second jobs to get by. Still, according to a 2024 Arab Barometer report, 85 percent of Lebanese citizens say they have a high level of trust in the army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LAF has also proven it can be an effective fighting force when called upon. Joseph Aoun, now Lebanon\u2019s president, led the LAF in operations against ISIL (ISIS) and other armed groups along the Lebanese-Syrian border in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a solid institution, and it has considerable combat capabilities, especially regarding special forces,\u201d Jouni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, multiple sources told Al Jazeera the army could not confront Hezbollah directly because there was no political consensus in the country, and any such confrontation could lead to internal strife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/decdd917-dc18-4848-a086-db6ce3098309\/d8a48bef-f7be-41a6-8d99-b0367203aabd\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lebanon: Beirut residents \u2018living on edge\u2019 as Israel intensifies bombardment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Lebanese civil war from 1975 to 1990, the Lebanese army split along sectarian lines. Various sources told Al Jazeera that such a scenario could repeat should the LAF confront Hezbollah, with Shia members defecting rather than fighting relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t rely on them in a confrontation with Hezbollah,\u201d Jouni said. \u201cFirst, this confrontation will inevitably lead us to a very violent civil war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The army source said the public demand on the LAF currently falls into two groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first side wants the army to confront Hezbollah,\u201d the source said. \u201cAnd that could split the army, which has a sizable Shia contingent,\u201d the source added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other side wants the army to fight Israel, and that would be suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like the Israeli army, the LAF is funded and equipped predominantly by the US. But the US also provides Israel\u2019s military with billions of dollars and far superior equipment to the LAF, creating a disparity between the two national armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/2c4e3516-2ca6-4310-a602-46f33c084e72\/eb449574-ad37-4c09-8936-2d522dc33077\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Moment building in Beirut southern suburbs was targeted by Israeli strike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"raids-and-checkpoints-over-confrontation\">Raids and checkpoints over confrontation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if the divisiveness over Hezbollah\u2019s weapons was not present, there is still the question of the army\u2019s capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hezbollah is well-trained in street combat and rebel warfare tactics. It also has experience fighting in Syria on the side of former President Bashar al-Assad\u2019s forces and against Israel in southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LAF, on the other hand, is more suitable for special operations, Jouni said. \u201cIt\u2019s not geared towards chasing Hezbollah members in the streets of Lebanon,\u201d he said. \u201cThat would deplete the army.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various sources told Al Jazeera that instead, the LAF has focused on stopping people carrying unsanctioned arms at checkpoints. That has included Hezbollah members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seth Krummrich, a retired US Army colonel who worked with the LAF during his time as the former chief of staff for Special Operations Command Central, told Al Jazeera that it would be unlikely for the Lebanese army to directly confront Hezbollah battalions in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt best, we can expect arrest warrants and raids,\u201d Krummrich said, now Vice President of Client Risk Management at Global Guardian. \u201cBut not head-to-head fighting with foot soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/b001d830-f7a3-48df-8b93-21660f06d35d\/a3cec50a-a928-4b38-8488-53ffd98e4091\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Israeli strikes on Lebanon intensify amid mass displacement and forced evacuations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with the current security status quo, disarming Hezbollah would be impossible, experts said. First, Hezbollah fighters, particularly its elite Radwan Force, are engaging Israeli troops on Lebanese territory. And second, even if the LAf focused on areas where there are no clashes, it would be a logistical nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The military source said much of Hezbollah\u2019s weapons are in deep valleys north of the Litani River that are difficult to access.
