Ali Larijani is a longtime Iranian political insider, often viewed as a pragmatist, who has an important role following the killing of Supreme Leader Khamenei.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>For decades, Ali Larijani was the calm, pragmatic face of the Iranian establishment \u2013 a man who wrote books on the 18th-century German philosopher Immanuel Kant and negotiated nuclear deals with the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But on March 1, the 67-year-old secretary of the Supreme National Security Council\u2019s tone changed irrevocably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing on state television just 24 hours after US-Israeli air strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a> and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander, Mohammad Pakpour, Larijani delivered a message of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmerica and the Zionist regime [Israel] have set the heart of the Iranian nation ablaze,\u201d he wrote on social media. \u201cWe will burn their hearts. We will make the Zionist criminals and the shameless Americans regret their actions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe brave soldiers and the great nation of Iran will deliver an unforgettable lesson to the hellish international oppressors,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larijani, who accused US President Donald Trump of falling into an \u201cIsraeli trap\u201d, is now at the centre of Tehran\u2019s response to its biggest crisis since 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is expected to have an important role<\/a> alongside the three-man transitional council running Iran after Khamenei\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, who is the man tasked with steering Iran\u2019s security strategy as its war with Israel and the US continues?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
