<\/a>Italy says it\u2019s unable to join US President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d owing to a \u201cconstitutional limit\u201d marking the latest setback faced by the self-styled \u201cinternational peace building body\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told the ANSA news agency on Saturday that conflicts between Italy\u2019s constitution and the charter of the Board of Peace were \u201cinsurmountable from a legal standpoint\u201d, but his country would always be \u201cavailable to discuss peace initiatives\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy joins several European countries \u2013 including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom \u2013 that have not joined the controversial board, which was\u00a0greenlit<\/a>\u00a0by the United Nations last year as a transitional governing body for post-war Gaza before expanding its remit in a\u00a0sweeping charter<\/a>\u00a0that made no mention of the war-torn Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy\u2019s decision comes despite the close relationship<\/a> between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Board of Peace chairman Trump amid growing concern that the global conflict mediator \u2013 launched<\/a> in Davos, Switzerland last month as the US president made an aggressive play for Greenland<\/a> \u2013 is designed to eclipse the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tajani pointed to Article 11 of the Italian constitution, which precludes the country from joining organisations unless there are \u201cconditions of equality with other states\u201d, which would not be the case under a charter that names Trump as veto-wielding chairman<\/a> serving as the final authority on its interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
