two-month-old Mohammed Abu Harbid has become the latest victim of Israel\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/rdbiof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genocidal war<\/a>\u00a0that has stripped Palestinians of shelter, warmth and survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zaher al-Wahidi, director of health information at the Ministry of Health, told Al Jazeera the infant died from severe hypothermia at al-Rantisi Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His death brings the number of children who have frozen to death in the enclave since November 2025 to four, and 12 since the start of the genocidal war in October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As severe depression brings torrential rain and freezing winds to the coastal enclave, thousands of displaced families are facing a catastrophic humanitarian emergency, with the most vulnerable paying the highest price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" opened neonatal ward is fighting a losing battle to keep premature babies alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ward, established in early 2026 to meet soaring demand, receives about 17 infants daily. But Ahmed Abu Shaira, a medical staff member, says they are operating with one hand tied behind their back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe face many dilemmas, including a scarcity of medical equipment,\u201d Abu Shaira told Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent Talal al-Arouqi. \u201cSome incubators come to us without batteries \u2026 the occupation forces the entry of incubators without batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a death sentence in a facility plagued by chronic power outages. During Al Jazeera\u2019s visit, the electricity cut out more than five times in less than an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe try to reach a certain temperature for the child, but every time we do, the power cuts,\u201d Abu Shaira explained. Without the internal batteries that Israeli restrictions have banned, the incubators go cold the instant the generator fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compounding the crisis is a lack of medication to help premature lungs develop and a severe shortage of baby formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are now receiving babies born before 37 weeks \u2026 due to early labour caused by the mothers\u2019 poor health,\u201d Abu Shaira added. \u201cThese babies are prone to hypothermia \u2026 which can lead to death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/72d0b0f0-1f86-4383-96dd-3e39f2aa49c8\/17260574-225e-4988-85a1-c5f9f1f14453\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Winter rains bring misery to displaced Palestinians in Gaza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"standing-like-pillars\">Standing like pillars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the hospitals, the situation is equally dire. In western&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/ip9z08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a>&nbsp;City, the Kafarna family\u2019s struggle for survival is measured in sleepless nights spent holding up their tent against the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/dqoccd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we hear the word \u2018depression\u2019, we start shaking \u2026 it\u2019s like the horrors of doomsday,\u201d the father told Al Jazeera Mubasher\u2019s Ayman al-Hissi, standing inside a tent with balding fabric that offers little protection from the elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur bedding is soaked \u2026 My daughters are sick from the cold,\u201d he said. \u201cIllness is spreading among the children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm on Saturday night nearly destroyed their fragile shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI stood all night holding this pole, and my wife and daughters leaned against the wooden beams to brace against the wind,\u201d the father recounted. \u201cWe took turns holding the tent \u2026 water was coming in from above and below.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cf-images.eu-west-1.prod.boltdns.net\/v1\/static\/665003303001\/95f1bf71-1fcd-4c84-b917-d4c9d4bf49b8\/0971c8f6-e861-4a3f-9476-f88475800559\/1920x1080\/match\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Palestinians suffer flooded tents and debris as cold and rain lash Gaza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"just-a-piece-of-cloth\">\u2018Just a piece of cloth\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mother, exhausted and surrounded by sick children, described their shelter as a \u201cpiece of cloth\u201d that hides them from view but protects them from nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t even get medicine for my sick daughter \u2026 every time the wind blows, the tent snaps,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their daughter, Waad, huddled in a tracksuit donated by a charity, has only one wish: a better tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wish they would bring us a \u2018dome tent\u2019 to protect us from the cold and rain,\u201d Waad told Al Jazeera. \u201cWe [nearly] drowned last night \u2026 I wish I could go back to school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mother recalled a terrifying moment when Waad fell ill at night. \u201cShe was vomiting from her mouth and nose, and I couldn\u2019t even find a light to see her \u2026 I didn\u2019t know how to help her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the winter conditions worsen, the family\u2019s plea is simple yet desperate: \u201cWe appeal to anyone with a conscience \u2026 send us caravans, send us tents \u2026 anything to cover us from the cold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reference Link:- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/11\/fourth-palestinian-baby-freezes-to-death-in-gaza-since-november\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/11\/fourth-palestinian-baby-freezes-to-death-in-gaza-since-november<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four babies have died from the cold since November, as power cuts disable incubators and families in flooded tents struggle to keep their children alive.
