Ireland<\/a> has joined with six other European countries to condemn Israeli<\/a> legislation \u201ctargeting\u201d a United Nations aid organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Foreign Affairs<\/a> said the legislation includes measures to \u201ccut water, electricity and communications\u201d to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (Unrwa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said this undermines the UN mandate, violates international law, and is contrary to the findings of the International Court of Justice, \u201dwhile risking grave humanitarian consequences for the Palestinian civilian population and refugees\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iceland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain also issued the joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>They called on Israel to allow established international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to be \u201cpermitted to operate in Gaza and that any deregistrations be halted\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said NGOs \u201cconstitute a significant part of all humanitarian and especially health services in Gaza and the West Bank\u201d and they are needed \u201cto confront the catastrophic humanitarian situation\u201d in Gaza and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement concludes: \u201cRespect for the privileges and immunities of the United Nations and for international humanitarian law is imperative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislation passed by the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, on December 29 was quickly condemned by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who described it as \u201cinconsistent with the status and international legal framework applicable to UNRWA\u201d and called for it to be \u201cimmediately repealed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel says the rules are aimed at preventing Hamas and other militant groups from infiltrating the aid organisations. \u2013 PA<\/p>\n\n\n\n
