{"id":27493,"date":"2025-12-31T04:16:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T04:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=27493"},"modified":"2025-12-31T04:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T04:16:12","slug":"un-slams-new-israeli-legislation-against-unrwa-as-outrageous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsrra.com\/?p=27493","title":{"rendered":"UN slams new Israeli legislation against UNRWA as \u2018outrageous\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The United Nations warns that recent actions by Israel against the UN agency for Palestinian refugees risk depriving millions of people of basic services such as education and healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Knesset&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/knesset-passes-bill-blocking-provision-of-electricity-and-water-to-unrwa-facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed new legislation<\/a>&nbsp;yesterday, formally stripping the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) of diplomatic immunity and barring Israeli companies from providing water or electricity to the agency\u2019s institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation also grants the Israeli government the authority to expropriate the agency\u2019s properties in East Jerusalem, including its headquarters and main vocational training center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini condemns the legislation as \u201coutrageous,\u201d decrying it on social media as \u201cpart of an ongoing, systematic campaign to discredit UNRWA and thereby obstruct the core role that the agency plays providing human-development\u202fassistance\u202fand services to\u202fPalestine refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Filippo Grandi, the outgoing head of the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, and a former UNRWA chief, also criticizes the move as \u201cvery unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with AFP, he highlights that UNRWA, unlike other UN agencies, provides basic public services such as education and healthcare to the millions of registered Palestinian refugees it serves across Gaza and the West Bank, as well as in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you deprive those people of those services\u2026 then you had better find a substitute,\u201d he says, warning: \u201cI think it would be very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel has alleged that more than 10% of UNRWA\u2019s staff in Gaza have ties to terror groups, and that educational facilities under the organization\u2019s auspices consistently incite hatred of Israel and glorify terror. In February 2024, the IDF revealed the existence of a subterranean Hamas data center directly beneath UNRWA\u2019s Gaza Strip headquarters.
