<\/a>After Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and the Netherlands\u00a0withdrew<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0Eurovision Song Contest<\/em>\u00a0amid controversy surround Israeli participation, Iceland\u2019s public broadcaster\u00a0R\u00daV<\/em>\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday that the country will not be participating in the multi-national competition next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement signed by Director General Stef\u00e1n Eir\u00edksson, the broadcaster said, \u201cThe participation of the Israeli public broadcaster KAN<\/em> in the contest has recently caused disunity, both among the member stations of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R\u00daV\u2019s<\/em> statement said Eir\u00edksson brought up Iceland\u2019s concerns regarding Israel at the EBU\u2019s meeting in Geneva, but that the question was not voted on. The broadcaster faced mounting pressure from artists\u2019 associations and the public to withdraw from Eurovision<\/em>, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGiven the public debate in this country and the reactions to the decision of the EBU that was taken last week it is clear that neither joy nor peace will prevail regarding the participation of R\u00daV<\/em> in Eurovision<\/em>,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThe song contest and Eurovision<\/em> have always had the aim of uniting the Icelandic nation but it is now clear that this aim cannot be achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BBC<\/em><\/a> quoted KAN<\/em> Chief Executive Golan Yochpaz saying, \u201cThe attempt to remove KAN<\/em> from the contest can only be understood as a cultural boycott.\u201d He added, \u201cA boycott may begin today with Israel, but no one knows where it will end or who else it may harm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Iceland out of the contest, all five countries threatening a boycott of the competition in the lead-up to the EBU\u2019s Geneva meeting have followed through with their threats to leave. Finland\u2019s Yle,<\/em> which said it was unsure if it would take part after the meeting, confirmed its participation<\/a> on December 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austrian broadcaster ORF<\/em> has maintained its commitment to hosting the competition, despite the financial pressure<\/a> it faces from multiple participating networks leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
