Multiple recognitions are expected despite strong pushback from Israel and the US amid intensifying attacks on Gaza.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>More than 100 years after the\u00a0Balfour Declaration<\/a>\u00a0backed \u201cthe establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people\u201d, and 77 years after the creation of Israel in the British Mandate of Palestine, the United Kingdom is set to formally recognise a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce on Sunday, two days before the start of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where Palestinian sovereignty after decades of\u00a0occupation and apartheid by Israel<\/a>\u00a0will be in focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes after the UK government said in July that it would shift its longstanding approach of holding off recognition until a supposed moment of maximum impact \u2013 unless Israel stops its genocidal war in Gaza<\/a>, commits to a long-term sustainable peace process that delivers a two-state solution, and allows more aid into the enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the catastrophic situation in Gaza has only grown significantly more dire over the past few weeks, as the Israeli military continues to systematically destroy Gaza City to seize it, while continuing to starve and displace the famine-stricken population<\/a> of the enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily raids by Israeli soldiers and attacks by settlers are also ongoing across the occupied West Bank, with Israel advancing plans to annex the Palestinian territory and \u201cbury\u201d the idea of a contiguous Palestinian state<\/a> with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Israeli government has blasted the UK allies as well as more than 75 percent of UN member states that formally recognise Palestinian sovereignty, claiming their stance \u201crewards terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Britain\u2019s deputy prime minister said on Sunday that recognising a Palestinian state would not bring one into existence \u201covernight\u201d, underlining his government\u2019s position that recognition must be part of a broader peace process, one that has been in a moribund state for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny step to recognise it is because we wish to keep alive the prospects of a two-state solution,\u201d David Lammy told Sky News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch claimed she wants to see a two-state solution in the region, but signalled she wants to move in lockstep with Israel and the United States, its ironclad military, financial and political backer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is obvious, and the US has been clear on this, that recognition of a Palestinian state at this time and without the release of the hostages, would be a reward for terrorism,\u201d she wrote in The Telegraph over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
