In previous years, Gaza saw just one or two cases of AFP per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symptoms occur when the body\u2019s immune system is triggered by certain viruses, in some cases causing it to attack its own nervous system. In Gaza, the rapid spread of water-borne infectious diseases has led to a striking rise in AFP cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/08\/20\/16\/23\/Beds-sit-in-a-flooded-field-hospital-after-sewage-water-inundated-the-emergency-department-of-Nasser.jpeg\" alt=\"Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis was flooded with sewage last week\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis was flooded with sewage last week<em>&nbsp;(Reuters)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/world-health-organisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/a>&nbsp;and Dr Ahmed al-Farra, head of paediatrics at Nasser Hospital in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-gaza-city-palestine-netanyahu-war-b2811896.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khan Younis,&nbsp;<\/a>told&nbsp;<em>The Independent&nbsp;<\/em>thatIsrael\u2019s destruction of Gaza\u2019s vital water treatment plants is largely responsible for the spread of these diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo see 110 cases, this is incredible. This is an outbreak, it is alarming for us to see that number,\u201d Dr Farra said, describing the situation as \u201cone of the most challenging\u201d medical incidents Gaza has seen since 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acute flaccid paralysis is associated with a variety of causes, including Guillain\u2013Barre syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune condition and the main cause of AFP in Gaza. Severe cases of AFP and GBS can cause lifetime paralysis, or respiratory failure, potentially resulting in death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaza\u2019s health ministry says 36 per cent of the reported cases of GBS were in children aged under 15. In Nasser Hospital and Al-Shifa hospital, the hotspots of the outbreak, at least nine people have died of AFP so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Palestinian and Israeli medics, along with the WHO, have told&nbsp;<em>The Independent<\/em>&nbsp;that critical and lifesaving treatments are not available anywhere in the ravaged enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/08\/20\/15\/35\/Israel-Palestinians-Gaza-Heat-2jz47sr0.jpeg\" alt=\"A Palestinian girl drinks water near a distribution centre in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Palestinian girl drinks water near a distribution centre in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip<em>&nbsp;(AP)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Israeli military denies that it prevents the entry of medicine into the strip, and says it \u201ccontinuously and consistently facilitates the operation of medical services\u201d in Gaza. It blames its destruction of water infrastructure on Hamas, which it accused of \u201cembedding its military assets among the civilian population\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other factors such as overcrowding in shelters, malnutrition, and restricted access to healthcare have all exacerbated the crisis, a WHO spokesperson said<em>,&nbsp;<\/em>adding that the abrupt nature of the recent surge in cases is partly due to improved monitoring processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lab testing samples came back positive with enterovirus, a group of viruses which typically spreads through humans or water. Most samples also contained&nbsp;<em>Campylobacter jejuni<\/em>, a species of bacteria commonly found in animal faeces, Dr Farra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lab findings show that \u201cwater that the patients are receiving is completely polluted by sewage\u201d due to the \u201cdestruction of the sewage system\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July last year, Oxfam reported that Israel had destroyed 70 per cent of all sewage pumps and 100 per cent of wastewater treatment plants in Gaza. It accused Israel of restricting the entry of Oxfam\u2019s water testing equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/08\/20\/20\/26\/ezgif-44491439f33bce.jpeg\" alt=\"Satellite imagery shows that the solar panels powering the Sheikh Ejleen wastewater treatment plant have been largely destroyed\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Satellite imagery shows that the solar panels powering the Sheikh Ejleen wastewater treatment plant have been largely destroyed<em>&nbsp;(Planet Labs)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Thursday that Israel is \u201cdeliberately depriving people of water in Gaza\u201d. Since June 2024, Israel has only approved one in every 10 import requests of items for water desalination, the charity said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIsrael must begin allowing the importation of critical equipment for water supply and distribution, at scale,\u201d MSF added. \u201cThe Israeli military must stop its destruction of water infrastructure and allow the immediate repair of water systems that have been damaged to ensure people have life-sustaining access to water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such is the desperation for clean water that health officials in Gaza are advising people to place water which they want to drink in sunlight, so it is as sterilised as possible before they drink it, Dr Farra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An IDF spokesperson said the military \u201cdoes not seek to harm civilian infrastructure and strikes only military targets, in accordance with international law\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added that the IDF \u201cworks to ensure humanitarian water supply in Gaza\u201d, and said millions of litres are provided daily via Israel\u2019s water lines alongside the local water system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/08\/20\/20\/47\/shutterstock_editorial_10185731a.jpeg\" alt=\"Young girls drink from communal taps\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Young girls drink from communal taps<em>&nbsp;(Masoud\/SOPA Images\/Shutterstock)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But medics and humanitarian organisations in Gaza say that a shortage of clean water is behind the increase of AFP \u2013 which they are struggling to address without the proper treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Severe cases can need months to recover in hospital, but beds are in high demand. An Australian medic who recently left Gaza told&nbsp;<em>The Independent&nbsp;<\/em>that all 50 intensive care beds in Nasser Hospital are filled up, each and every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP requires a \u201clong time\u201d for recovery with \u201cchallenging treatment\u201d, Dr Farra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2025\/08\/20\/20\/59\/GettyImages-2160548842-(1).jpeg\" alt=\"Children walk past destroyed buildings and a puddle of sewage water erupting from collapsed underground pipes in Khan Younis\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Children walk past destroyed buildings and a puddle of sewage water erupting from collapsed underground pipes in Khan Younis<em>&nbsp;(AFP\/Getty)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), an expensive treatment for GBS which prevents respiratory failure, is not available in Gaza. Neither is plasma exchange, a procedure in which blood is filtered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israeli paediatrician Prof Dan Turner, a human rights activist and deputy dean of the medical faculty at the University of Hebrew, helps coordinate the entry of medical aid into Gaza.
